    Datalogging!

Is there any kind of device out there that can be used to datalog then download onto a laptop or desktop with TPro?
Looking for a way around hauling my laptop around while datalogging.

    Re: Datalogging!

I been trying all day to get custom PIDs to work on torque and I've come to the conclusion that it simply wont work. The same PIDs will work in universal patcher's logger but I don't have a laptop and driving around with a desktop computer just isn't feasible. I can even get a response when I set up the PID in the custom PID menu but for some reason it just defaults to 0 and I can't wrap my head around why. Following because it would be nice if I could log with my android instead of having to spend a bunch of money on a laptop.

    Re: Datalogging!

Many years ago GM dealerships had a near bulletproof cassette tape recorder that would plug into the ALDL to record data for really difficult intermittent problems. The dealership would install the device and instruct the customer to hit the trigger when the problem they wanted to capture was happening. Later, the customer would return to the dealership where the recorder would be removed for the technician to review with the Tech 1 scantool.

These devices can be found for sale from time to time.

GM released a new recorder for OBDII vehicles. The new device was an all electronic recorder which basically provided the same functionality for OBDII but without the old school cassette tapes. These can also be found used from time to time:

There are newer, smaller devices for OBDII but none of the solutions are good for OBDI. I think an old phone with aldldroid might be a reasonable solution for you.

You will need a cable or bluetooth connection to record data. This thread is recent and may be helpful.

Have you ever used ALDL droid and would you trust the data it spits out? You probably noticed I was part of that discussion on the GMT400 site and thought that maybe some of his data was wrong. I also don't trust bluetooth so if these things actually work I'd be running hard wire.

Do you own an android phone? why not just use ALDLdroid? it's cheap and will do exactly what you seem to want to do, i've been using it for years.

I've been using John's 1320 Bluetooth ALDL interface (which maybe unobtainable) with ALDLdroid on a Lenovo tablet. It's been adequate to dial in my VEs. I may be too inexperienced with ALDLdroid and maybe it's just the settings...the only thing that I have a gripe about...the BLM histograms RPM and KPa values don't line up with the VE tables that I need to adjust so I gotta do a whole lot of extrapolating. What I wouldn't mind doing, is getting a head unit that is android based which I can use ALDLdroid...

I've been using PCMlogger and it gives fast, accurate data unlike my Tunerpro experiment, but it still requires a laptop.

Yes it is. Not my car/pic. Mines is a ‘90 w a T56 and a gaping hole where the head unit would be.

Also excellent. I have the truck ZF 6spd in my Silverado and a T56 in my 80 Camaro and 96 Beretta. haha

While only marginally better than dragging your laptop around, I'd suggest a small windows tablet. Easy to plug in and run TunerPro on.

I have never used ALDL Droid. I have used Bluetooth communications apps for a number of years. These days commercial scantools use bluetooth communications to eliminate cables making it easier for the technician.
