260z project that needs some tuning help

Good afternoon all. I started this 260z project several years ago and have done a complete ground up restoration. Nothing is stock but I wanted the car to look more or less stock. Because I modernized every part of the car, I wanted the Nissan L6 engine to be fuel injected but look stock.
I found a place that makes fuel injection kits for classic British cars with SU side draft carburetors, and this company had also done a few Datsun Z cars.
This kit comes with all the parts and wiring harness. The kit has 2 adaptors to hold 2 fuel injectors for the SU carbs, O2 sensor, tps. iac, map sensor and we modified the distributor so it could be controlled with a GM obd1 ecm 16146288.
Now that the car is complete, and I have the car running, I have been doing data logs and then they would send me a new chip. At this point I have got 8 chips from them and the way the car runs is not getting better so I had Boosted put an adaptor in the ecm so I could run an emulator and tune the car real time, but I can't get tuner pro rt to read the eprom that's on the emulator, Boosted is having problems and can't help me so I'm here hoping for some incite.
    Thanks

Welcome to the forum. That's a very clean looking Z.

Can you provide more details about your hardware / software and what problem you're having reading the file? Was there an adapter installed in the ecm to use non-stock chips? Are you able to post one of the files you've read?

    Thanks,

Re: 260z project that needs some tuning help

Thank you for the compliment. This car is a complete nut and bolt restoration that I have done every part of including the body work and paint.
As for the hardware, according to the number on the Gm ecm it is a 16146288, I haven't been able to find that number on any list, so I think the company that put this kit together probably have changed it. I had Boosted nd put an adapter in the ecm and installed their cobra emulator. Boosted also took the map off the chip that was in the ecm and transferred it to the emulator.
The car runs and will drive but floods bad at startup and at just over half throttle feels like it hits a rev limiter, under half throttle it drives ok.
Since boosted put the emulator in I haven't been able to read the file. I have tuner pro rt on my laptop and tuner pro will see the emulator, but I don't have the number of the bin file to open it with. So, at this point I don't have a new file.
I have some files using aldl WinZip data log that I sent to the company that sold me the kit. I can post one of those if it will help.
I thank you for any help you can provide.

That ecm was used in 1990 - 1993 Chevy pickups with 4.3 V6 and 700R4 or manual transmission.

I believe Tunerpro RT will have a "read file" or "download file" option in the emulation window. I haven't used TP with an emulater in while so hopefully someone with a better memory can jump in to help.

Re: 260z project that needs some tuning help

Thank you for the reply, I have looked around for a 16146288 and haven't been able to find one. I have found a 16146299 that was used for V8's and a 16144288 that was used for V6's, if someone has a file or knows where to find one that would be great. I haven't done tuning like this before, and the learning curve is a lot to learn.
I have had my Z running and driving for well over a year and have 700 miles on it doing data logs and putting new chips in it and trying again. Thats why I got an emulator so I can get some real-time data so the car will run as good as it looks.
Any help well be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: 260z project that needs some tuning help

It appears I listed a different number. I agree that the ECM number you're asking about does not appear to be valid GM ECM part number. Sometime GM ECM's have multiple numbers on them. They will use the "service number" as the part number. Other numbers are internal numbers for GM Engineering or internal parts.

Can you share the kit supplier? I have found "Patton Machine" which sells an EFI conversion kit using an ECM supplied by Affordable Fuel Injection. Affordable Fuel Injection's website is at https://affordable-fuel-injection.com.

There is a learning curve for tuning your own ecm's. There are many details that have to be correct in order to read and write chips or emulators. I'm wondering if the number you're looking for when reading the file in the emulator is a chip number? Those older ECM's usually used a 2732 or 2732A eprom. Folks will use a newer, larger chip which can require a "file offset" or "buffer offset" and/or a "start address" when using a programmer or an emulator. One possibility to get the file is to ready the entire contents of the emulator and post the results here. If there is a valid .bin file we can likely extract it.

Re: 260z project that needs some tuning help

Thanks for the reply, Patton Machine is the supplier of the kit I have. I have gone back and forth with AFI many many times, and I have become very frustrated with this process. Early on the car was running lean so we put bigger injectors in it but instead of going 1 size I think we went 2 sizes and after that it has flooded at start up (bad when cold) and didn't fix the problem just past half throttle of feeling like it has a rev limiter keeping it from accelerating. This only happens at half throttle not at any particular rpm. My TPS does not do the full range, I have it set at -0.3 at idle and will get 68 at full throttle. The only check engine light is for too rich, AFI doesn't seem to think that this could be a problem but with every chip AFI sends this doesn't change. Every time I send AFI a log they say it looks fine, and he sends another chip, and it doesn't change.
Sorry for the rant, this has been a long prosses and my intension is not to put down AFI, that is why I felt that real time data might be better.
As far as the emulator goes, I haven't been able to read the program on the emulator, my laptop will see it but I can't get to the program and copy it. I could use some help to copy the program so I can post it.
    Thanks

Re: 260z project that needs some tuning help

Sorry this has been so frustrating. Trying to tune remotely can be very challenging, for both vehicle owner and tuner.

Have you been able to make any progress? The ECM has "Power Enrichment" mode which is designed to richen the engine slightly and to increase spark advance. This usually hapens above 3/4 throttle. I wonder if the the ECM can go into PE mode at the reported maximum TPS value. Possibly this is related to the feeling the car won't accelerate. There are other symptoms that can help with diagnosis. Is black smoke coming from the tailpipe when the problem occurs? Are the spark plugs covered in carbon? Is there any chance the issue is being caused by the ignition system?

As far as the emulator goes, I haven't been able to read the program on the emulator, my laptop will see it but I can't get to the program and copy it. I could use some help to copy the program so I can post it.
What I'm seeing is: "My laptop is able to connect to the emulator but I do not have a way to download the program." Does this sound correct?

Re: 260z project that needs some tuning help

Thank you for all your help, when I start the car, it floods bad and has a lot of black smoke. When I get just past half throttle, I don't see any smoke, but I haven't had anybody behind me that would be able to see it I can't see any out the back in the mirror.
The plugs are very dark or black. I have done a lot of testing to make sure that I'm not having a phasing problem with the distributor, and it seems fine, everything else is new a couple of time over just to make sure I didn't have a bad plug or plug wires.
My laptop has turner pro rt on it and it does hook up with the emulator, but I can't see the program, I think that is because I don't know the bin file #. Is there a way I can copy the file so I can post it here? I was hooked up to the emulator yesterday and didn't want to erase the file in an attempted to copy it. I think I get a little intimidated by all the different buttons that tuner pro has to look at, I have spent a lot of time trying to learn how all of this works but without seeing it doing something it's a little intimidating.
    Thanks again.

Re: 260z project that needs some tuning help

I will try to find time tomorrow to connect my laptop with an emulator and see if I can work out the correct steps to get a file out.

Tunerpro RT is also able to connect to the vehicle ALDL port to view and monitor engine operating parameters. Have you tried doing this yet?

Re: 260z project that needs some tuning help

I appreciate your help, I haven't tried through the ALDL port, I'll try that today. I attached a past log if someone wants to take a look at it. This was a win zip file and it was the last log I sent to Affordable Fuel injection.

Thank you but turner pro came back and gave me this notice. No XDF file specified, or XDF specifies bin of 0 size.

Well...in order to read the bin file, you need a definition file (XDF) loaded to read it. Going back to post 3, 4, 5, 6...sounds like we have a dilemma of not knowing what ECM you have. Your data acquisition file (ADX) works hand in hand with the XDF so you kinda need to know what ECM you have to decide which ADX to use. You won't hurt anything if you loaded 16144288 XDF and tried to read the bin file. If indeed not compatible, the parameters/data in the bin will just look like garbage.

Out of curiosity before Cobra emulator, were you swapping tunes with 24 pin PROM in a carrier??? Sorta recall the 2732A PROM ECMs needing a socket booster when using an emulator but in my experience this was not an issue using an AutoProm. Also, I noticed on older ostrichs there was some capability to move jumpers to select 24 pin or 28 pin PROMs this may not apply to the cobra though.

In post #3 you mentioned Boosted loaded the bin to the cobra emulator. Do you have a functional Check Engine Light? Key On Engine Off, you getting a solid CEL or a rapid flashing CEL? If you're getting the latter, chances are the ECM isn't reading the emulator or there is no bin loaded to the emulator.

At this point could be daunting for a beginner but you have the necessary hardware/software/cabling to load a bin, data log and modify the bin based on the feedback from the datalogs.

Re: 260z project that needs some tuning help

Thanks for the reply, before the cobra i was sending data logs and then they would send me a new 24 pin prom. When Boosted put the 28-pin adapter in, they took the file off the prom that was in the ecm and loaded it on the emulator. At that time, they were going to help me get it set up, but just after that they started having problems and now haven't responded to any of my attempts to talk to them.
I will try to use the XDF for the 16144288 and see what bit does.
I do have a working check engine light and there is a file in the emulator because in runs just like it did before the emulator was put in, I don't get any check engine codes except the one for running too rich mostly at startup and sometimes when it idles for a couple of minutes.
I guess if I have to, I could put a known file form a V6 and start from there, but that might open a big can of worms.
I appreciate all the help, thanks
