Without a properly programmed EPROM, the ECM will not send any data.

Before I had my test bench set-up, and needed to check for powering up, I liked to at least connect a check engine light to verify that the EPROM is being read correctly. CEL on, one flash and then solid (with no RPM signal), means that the EPROM is being read correctly, a rapidly flashing CEL, means that the EPROM is not being read correctly. This will help diagnose a hardware or software problem trying to connect to the ALDL.
