I seem to remember reading that early and later 4l80e used different solenoids to shift, the early 4l80Es would work with an 8625, but the later 4l80Es used a pwm selenoid and the 8625 could not provide the pwm. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember reading that somewhere while I was researching the switch.
