    3.4/3400 Build, New to Tuning

    Hey guys,

Little bit of background on the car. I purchased a 1995 Camaro with the 3.4L in it back in 2010 as my first vehicle. I drove it for a couple years and ended up parking it due to a blown headgasket. Life continued to move on but the car always stuck around until I was able to put some time into it. Decided to go the top end conversion route and started assembling everything. The whole top end came from an 01 Grand Am GT. Heads w/ Comp 26986 Springs, custom length pushrods to go with my custom Wot-tech cam, 3400 pistons from the fwd car. I looked at what others had done and tried to emulate it to the best of my abilities. I have a buddy who steered me towards 28# Injectors from the 01 trailblazer as they would be tuneable and would give me the option to boost down the road if I wanted. We got the car running in the spring and started tuning using WinFlash and TunerPro, ,but a sudden engine leak brought that to a halt. The oil seemed to be mixing with alot of gas (makes sense as when it was running, it was EXTREMELY rich). Few months ago I found an unreal deal on a rolling 1998 trans am shell and swapped everything over. The last few weeks have been an absolute nightmare filled with electrical work to get the engine running but we got it. We're still running super rich, and I'm looking to learn how to tune the build myself so I'm not reliant on anyone else. Any beginner guides or similar work that you guys have seen or know of I'd love to see it!

    Thanks,
    Johnny

I'm using the original pcm from my 3.4L. I believe it's the P66. I'm just waiting on a new ALDL cable to come in. Mine worked for reading the pcm one day, and the next it won't register anything. Spent a good 6 hours messing with the drivers, did a factory reset on the laptop and redownloaded everything and still no luck. Reddevilriver cable

Hmmm, we have to begin somewhere. I think beginning with TunerPro RT is a good place to strart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLRnRNapRN4

TunerPro RT is a good "Laptop" tool.

Still waiting for my new aldl cable to arrive, but I tried using my other one and it was giving me a checksum error. I've had the car running with smaller injectors in the meantime and it runs decent, but im not getting any reading other than a checksum error and no engine signal in Scan9495.

Could my pcm be bricked? I didn't try and tune it, but I did have a battery charger hooked up while I was attempting to scan before and since then I've also lost my odometer reading on the dash

you have a obd-i ecm in an obd-ii chassis. is the obd-i data wire the only thing connected to your aldl cable? if not, maybe run a new wire? also make sure your grounds are ok

bricking your ecm should only happen during a flash write, and usually results in your engine not running, so i doubt it's dead

see if my flashhack tool connects? http://fbodytech.com/flashhack/

Well, I ordered a new cable and on the 7th of August and it just got here today. Did the drivers, plugged it in and boom. Nothing. I tried your flashhack tool @steveo and it was saying silent bus and then unable to connect. I have the OBD port wired to new grounds and directly to the pcm serial data wire. The pcm power wire is the same between the obd1 and 2 connector and I'm still getting nothing. I'm at a loss. When I try and use Gary Dougs scan9495, the communications tab tells me I'm missing an engine signal and also an actuator signal. Not really sure what to do next.

Hi Robin, Chatted with you under a different user name on V6F-Body forum. I can feel the frustration you are having. Quite the struggle you have been going through.

One thing I did early on was to go to the u-pull-it wrecking yard and get the PCM and the first couple of feet of the wiring harness. Then crawl under the dash and get the ALDL Datalink connector. Doesn't matter if it's auto or manual. Wire it up on the work bench. Just need the 2 +12v PCM power, PCM grounds, ALDL signal/ground from the PCM. You can wire in a sensor or 2 to check signals. Maybe the ECT or MAP sensor. Make sure all of the unused wires are taped off so nothing shorts out.

BTW, I have a decent bin for my hybrid motor. I've been running it for about a year and getting about 21 MPG. I could send it to you. It's a manual trans and you have auto. I have a stock auto trans bin that I could mod for you. I have 18 lb injectors from a 99 Montana or Venture van and the short fuel rails so I can run the stock Camaro injectors. That keeps the BPW and injector offsets really close. I'm thinking about going up to 24lb LT1 injectors in the near future since they are a better match for the HP and I can use the LT1 bin to transfer the injector data. I also have better data for the Acell 24lb injectors as another option.

    Good luck!

Second thought for your running rich problem: They make adapters to install the short injectors into the 3400 fuel rail. I have a full set and the wiring adapters. Not doing me any good. I'll give them to you if you want. I ended up building a new harness. Need to change the fuel press. reg. to 43.5 PSI. The one from the 99 Montana Van will fit.

    Other options:
Brackets to lower the 3400 fuel rail:
    https://www.milzymotorsports.com/310...ev1-injectors/

Injector height adapters allows other types of injectors to be used:
    https://fuelinjectorconnection.com/c...pters?coback=2

2 different types of wiring adapters:
    https://www.highflowfuel.com/c-12083...-pigtails.html
    https://www.highflowfuel.com/c-12083...-pigtails.html

I see that you are using TunerPro. For the P66_V6.adx it doesn't have a direct Injector Flow Rate constant. It uses Base Pulse Constant instead 2294 (18lb), 1721 (24lb), 1475 (28lb). It's inversely proportional to the actual flow. Not a linear relationship either. I just know that putting the flow rate into TunerCat causes the TunerPro number to change.

I also had to lean out the Crank and Choke AFR tables to get a good start. Mine was running in the 6-7 range, makes your eyes burn. Probably has something to do with changing from iron heads to aluminum.

    My latest bin

95 Camaro 3.4L w/ 2003 Grand AM aluminum heads, intake. 18 lb injectors, Short tube headers. Street/Strip cam. 2.5" exh.
