    Cleaning/Painting P01 Cases & Static Charges

I have some PCMs that have a fair amount of oxidation and would like to clean them up and stop the oxidation with paint/primer. Is generating static charges from using power tools a problem - I assume there must be some static generated. I've seen guys polish their PCM case - are they taking it apart/removing the board, etc before polishing? Curious if there are any issues to be concerned with. -Bob

Usually the electronics / circuit board(s) can be separated / removed from the case.

So if I don't feel comfortable taking it all apart how careful do I have to be with the cleaning process?

You shouldn't be that wary of taking one apart. They are not all that delicate. It's just a few screws to remove the cover, a few more screws securing the board and I believe the entire internals all come out in one piece.

i wouldn't worry about static discharge killing that ECM just giving it a rub.

i are no scientist but i don't think rubbing a rag or powered polishing device on a metal thing makes any substantial electrical charge.

but, if i WAS worried about it, id just do what i do when i work inside sensitive electronics... get an alligator clip and a wire and earth the thing (and yourself), so if any static discharge happens it'll survive.
