    Copying a chip for backup-Newbie

What is the process for copying an OEM chip. I have a rarer setup 1227747 BCC ADYS. This is an 1988 V20 Suburban LO5/SM465 combo. I would like to make a few spare/back up chips for safe keeping just in case. I have been monitoring junkyards, internet outlets for a spare, and have never seen one for sale. Also the .bins for TunerPro RT, kinda work, but gives me wonky injector duty cycles. Any info on chip cloning would be appreciated.

    Chips rarely fail.

The 1227747 uses a 2732 chip. The 2732 chip has a few variants like the 2732a. The basic difference between the 2732 variants is the voltage the chip is programmed with, 25 volts, 21 volts, or 12.5 volts.

2732 Chips are erased using Ultra Violet (UV) Light.

There are several hardware options for programming a 2732 chip, including the option of building your own chip programmer: http://www.vintage-computer.com/imag...20Prog0001.pdf

Here is a link for additional information on chip programming. https://www.classic-computers.org.nz...-21-eproms.htm

Send me Private Message (PM) if you would like me to help you clone your ADYS chip.

In a PM I was asked "How do you easily determine the voltage of a 2732 or its variants?"

I feel this is a good post to share my reply.

"It's almost impossible to identify the 2732 variant used by GM, mostly because of GM's part # system. GM used several different suppliers for 2732 chips, National, Intel, and Texas Instruments to name just a few of GM's 2732 chip suppliers. To add to the complexity of chip identification, each chip manufacture has variants within it's own 2732 line of chips. It's usually safe to start programming an unknown 2732 chip with 12.5 volts, if 12.5 volts fails, then try programming with 21 volts, then 25 volts. Usually the aftermarket sources (used chips of course) for 2732 chips will identify the chip manufacture and variant."

I'm not sure what you are using to read the chip. I've never been able to kill a chip by reading it, even at the wrong voltage...programming at the wrong voltage is a whole 'nother thing.

Once you have saved the file it's just a matter of programming to a new chip.

This place has always seemed to be a good source in the states for 2732a chips instead of the ebay/china route.

What program/software do you use to pull the info off the chip and then program a new one? I am looking at chip burners now, Dave W gave me his recommendation.

The product I use to program chips is "overkill" ( http://www.newark.com/batronix/bx32-...-ii/dp/53M6868 ) if your programming plans are for 2732 chips only.

The BX32 has a feature to auto identify chips (which works most of the time) and the ability to program "ALL" chips used by GM from 1982 to 1995.

There is a challenge sourcing a 1227747 "chip holder", the only source I know of for a 1227747 chip holder is the salvage yard.

For the 1227747 DIY types that have excellent soldering skills, there is the option to convert a 1227747 to a 27SF512 flash chip: http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Inj...sion-(27SF512)

I have been looking at the MCUMALL GQ-4x V4 kit. Comes with the UV eraser. It will do both the 2732 and 27sf512's and many many more.

    I use:

    https://www.amazon.com/Sunwin-Univer...540+programmer

and I made my own eraser using a UVC bulb for one of those little dog pee finder battery operated lamps, that was until I found an actual eprom eraser locally for cheap.

In any case, what you are trying to do can be done for way less than what you are looking at.
