if you're able to consistently send and receive the same data, i would say it is working as expected.

if you don't see the same data in the receive side as what you're sending, that is a problem.

How would i test to see if the recieve side is seeing what is transmitting? My ft232rl looks like the same one you use. I noticed that the numbers on my ftdi chip differ from the numbers on the ftdi chip on the ebay link of the adapter you use.

Looking close at my board today i noticed some pins on the ftdi chip are soldered together pins 4&5 and 7&8 from the top down. Is this normal or is this a mistake? so i tried hyperterminal on a different computer and could not get anything to happen except the tx light lighting up when i type stuff. nothing appears on screen.

i know a couple of them are supposed to be connected(and you'll probably find them connected to ground, at that), but i can't remember which.

Tx lighting up means the chip is at least acknowledging that you're sending stuff to it, but nothing back on hyperterminal and the Rx light not becoming active implies that the chip is either not actually sending data or it isn't receiving it.

Do you think the best move at this point would be to buy a new chip?

That brings the polarity back in sync with the TTL versions. You can't directly tie the two pins together however. See this link for the wiring: http://www.firebirdnation.com/forums/topic/457761-make-an-obd1-cable-for-under-20/page__pid__866681#entry866681
Ok so i inverted the tx and rx pins. Some promising news. When i hook up to tuner pro it still fails the cable test but now the red rx light lights up along with the green tx light. The same for aldl test, it failed the test at 4800 and 9600 baud but while it tested the tx and rx lights were going crazy. Tomorrow i will test it again on my truck and hope for the best.

Correct me if i am wrong but one wire should be connected to ground on the board and one wire connected to the tx and rx pins. You connect the ground wire to terminal (A) on the aldl connector from the ecu. If you have a 160 baud unit you connect the tx/rx to pin (E) on the aldl terminal and if you have a 8192 baud unit you connect the tx/rx wire to pin (M) on the aldl terminal.

I think i am going to try the original board seeing as people seem to have good luck with that one.

Update: Well i just bought the original adapter from page one and it looks like shipping is going to take a while. I hope it works. I returned my other adapter back to ebay so i can recoup that money.

2nd update: The adapter is already in jamaica, queens, ny. It should be to my house in a day or two.

Ok so my adapter came today. At first i hooked it up to my laptop and desktop and they both said device not recognised. I thought here we go again. Anyway i decided to try the usb cable that came with my burn 1. Plugged everything in and bam device recognised. Using the latest ftdi driver it passes the cable test in tuner pro and it passes the aldl test program. Now to finally get cracking on my truck.

so, all of your troubles were caused by the USB cable itself? i've only had a couple of super cheap ones do that to me and even then, they tended to do it intermittently.

Yep, the usb cable caused the troubles with the second adapter. I compared the two cables and they look almost identical except the one from moates has larger contacts on the cable ends. Also the cable quality in general feels better and looks much better. I tried pushing in the cable slowly and quickly i also wiggled the cable and nothing changed. It kept saying device not recognised, then it gave me a windows 43 error. Moates cable works like a charm. I contacted the ebay seller about the bad cable and am waiting for a response. I am excited to start data logging.

Update: I was able to connect my laptop to the ecm and view data. A few things i noticed is that every once in a while i get a data error and where it shows connected in blue it turns red for a second. I also noticed that my blm at idle is like 114, idk if that means anything. Also i got a code 42 for the esc. Could it mean something or could it be a residual from setting my timing with the timing wire unplugged. Also when viewing data the timing stayed at 00.00 no matter if i revved it up or not.

typical.. the short usb cables supplied with made in China stuff are sometimes doa. keep in mind they are less than 10 cents in bulk so quality control is not done
