    NO OBD1 Connection

I have beem using TunerCats for several years to tune my 94Lt1 engine in my 37 Ford. Everything ran good until recently when the motor started stumbling at stop lights. I dug out my laptop and cable to have a look but the TunerCats wanted my registration then would not accept it. All e-mails to tunercat were bounced back. I started up Scan 9495 to have a look but the app will not connect. I had loaned out my ALDL cable and it was lost so I ordered a new one.
Now none of the OBD1 programs will connect to the PCM. Ive changed drivers for the cable and am using 2.12.24.0. Can anyone tell me how to check out the cable? Is there someone who could test the cable for me? I've tried it on two laptops, both running Win 7,

    Thanks in advance
    Dave E

I just spent weeks battling a faulty cable. Read through the post below. A Moates cable solved the problem for me.

tunercats is only for editing and reading/writing bins; it wont help you diagnose your problem

of course having no access to tunercat is bad news, you can use tunerpro and the software in my signature to edit your bin until you get it back up and running

I need more help. I have installed new Moates cable, Ohmed out the serial data and ground wires from pin to pin and changed out PCM with another one I already had loaded with correct data. I have tried the Dell laptop that I have always used and also tried another laptop. Both running Windows 7. When I try to connect with EEHack, I get msg "Connecting" and "Sending Silence Request"
I have tested cables with ALDL-TEST and Realterm. Both respond correctly

Where else can I look for trouble? Ive been driving this car 3 years on Soloman tune. Nothing has changed but now I cannot connect

    Thanks
    Dave

Man that's a tough one. Did you go to the moates site and download the driver for your cable with links they have on there?

You probably already did this, but did you make sure your com port setting are correct?

Another thought I had. Did you make sure your PCM to chassis/engine ground is still good? Also have you checked out you battery and charging system?

I haven't changed the driver for the cable but I will today. I'll also confirm the grounds are good. I'm sure I making the same error each time I try something new. I've changed ALDL cables, laptops and PCMs. I had no problems when I installed engine and installed Soloman's tune 3 years ago. Do you know how I could check the data signal at the ALDL port? Maybe an ocilliscope? I'm willing to try anything at this point. The motor starts and runs good. It just developed a surging at idle with ac on and I started this exercise trying to eleminate

I have replaced the data sig (Pin D30) and the output/field service signal (D20) from aldl connector to the blue connector of the PCM. I have verified grounds. NO CONNECTION!! How can I verify data signal on term M of the ALDL???

I installed driver 2.12.26 then restarted my laptop. No connection. When I run ALDL-test or realTerm, both work as expected. When I attach the plug to the ALDL the programs fail the test. Exactly as expected. I need a way to verify data signal at term M of the ALDL. Anyone know how to do that? I expect a oscilloscope would see the signal but I am only guessing. Anyone have any info that could me ?

If you ran a new wire from your ALDL to your pin D30 the only other thing I can think of is maybe try running a new temp ground wire from you ALDL to your battery. One thing Steveo had mentioned was to make sure you are not powering your laptop off the car battery.

It kind of seems like you have some sort of electrical or mechanical issue if everything was working fine for three years and then all of the sudden the engine started running weird and you can no long get a good ALDL connection.

I'm pretty new to all of this stuff too so maybe someone else will have some other ideas.

the output/field service pin doesnt do anything for you. just data and ground matter.

you'd need an oscilloscope to verify that there's data. if you have fresh wire, i still tend to blame the cable

are you 100% sure of your com port setting?

Everything ran good until recently when the motor started stumbling at stop lights.

Wondering if maybe PCM is the problem.

Does the Ford have a check engine light? Is it on constantly? Do you get the "blink check" at key on?

How can I verify data signal on term M of the ALDL???
You might be able to use an analogue voltmeter and watch for lots of voltage swings. None indicates a problem. Some indicates more testing necessary.

UPDATE. I rigged up a bench harness and attached my spare PCM. Both laptops connected with either cable. I know now there is a problem with the ALDL ckt. in the car. I've already rewired the connector but I must have done something wrong. Anyhow, I now know my laptops and cables are working correctly and can zero in on the data serial port.

    Thanks for all your help

Cool! Glad you got it narrowed down. EFI Connection sells all the pins and connectors if you need anything for fixing yours.
