    Returnee to the Forum with basic question

    I am considering a switch to a 16168625 PCM from a my ECM 16144288 with BCC BARL but would like to get things running smoothly before making the switch.

    In order to ease installation, I added a 6" wire patch in the O2 sensor wire between the sensor and ECM. I am now experiencing engine problems, Code 45--Rich Exhaust once the ECM switches from OPEN to CLOSED loop. I am wondering if this extension is messing up the sensor readings to the ECM.

    Steveo,

    If I recall correctly, I used butt connectors for the spliced in portion. Also, in order to not create a bulge in one location, I staggered where I put each connector.

    In retrospect, I am thinking I should redo the splice and solder rather than use butt connectors, then individually shrink-wrapping each wire. Hopefully, this redo will cure the Code 45 problem.

    Any additional thoughts?

    "An oxygen supply inside the HO2S is necessary for proper HO2S operation. This supply of oxygen is supplied through the HO2S wires. All HO2S wires and connections should be inspected for breaks or contamination that could prevent reference oxygen from reaching the HO2S."

    o2 sensors measure the difference between reference oxygen and exhaust oxygen. basically don't cut that o2 wire open or you risk screwing up your o2 readings.

    Steveo, thanks for your responses.

    Now, I am a bit perplexed. Based on this information, once the harness is manufactured, installed in a vehicle, and connected to an ECM, any damage/breaks/contamination to the original wires between the O2 sensor and the ECM will be detrimental. I find that hard to believe and, more so, that there is no remedy or way to address this.

    To clarify, I have not cut or damaged the wires between the newly installed O2 sensor and the male plug. My splice was made between the female plug and the ECM. Time for me to do some spark-chasing with a VOM.

    Steveo, just to make sure my patch was making good connection, I removed the butt connectors, soldered the wires, and shrink-wrapped each wire individually. Lastly, I did a big shrink-wrap of the area to seal it off.

    Unfortunately, I am still experiencing issues with my motor not running smoothly.

    About a week or so ago, I decided to head in a different direction which was to simply install an adapter which I had made for a ECM-to-PCM swap. My goal is to ultimately install an 8625 PCM in place of the current 4288 ECM. This saga is captured in another thread titled "Doing ECM to PCM Swap" which I started to seek assistance in troubleshooting what appears to be a no-prime and fuel pump issue. The perplexing part is with the 4288 installed there is no problem with fuel prime and other fuel pump functions--only the struggle to continue running after the ECM switched from Closed to Open loop. However, upon installing an adapter which I have fashioned to bridge the 4288 ECM harness connector to 8625 PCM, the motor will only start if starter fluid sprayed or fuel is poured into the TBI but not will not continue to run due to there being no fuel being pumped to the TBI.

    Sure could use yours, Dave W's, or anyone else's expertise in solving this issue and allow me to get me on my way goal of tuning my resto-modified S10.
