On my cable, I didn't use a diode or a resistor. Just soldered the comm wire to both TX and RX, and the ground to ground.

I used a 1k resistor on the RX and a 1N914 diode on the TX. Diode cathode or stripe goes to the TX terminal. Connect the other ends of diode and resistor together to go to the ALDL data terminal. ALDL ground terminal goes to the ground terminal of the adapter.
