Has anyone run across this kind of anelectrical problem before?

Details - Stock 95 ford f150 which has been used hard and put away wet.

Last night, it would not start.. no click no fuel pump whine, nothing. Turned on the headlights and the battery was fine. It starts, turn off lights and it still starts. Let it sit for an hour and it won't start until you turn the lights on. Then it is fine until it sits again.. My son and I are stumped on this one.

Is there a diode in the starter circuit? I've seen some Ford starter circuit wiring diagrams that included, starter relay, starter switch, diode, and the EEC. When the ignition switch is in the start position the diode will forward bias, allowing current flow (signal) to the EEC. I wonder if the EEC is getting the start signal?

Strangely enough, a new ground cable and a battery solved the problem, don't ask me why turning the lights on made any difference.

I think the lights were completing your ground path maybe the terminals were corroded something caused a high resistance
