People say that memcal's have a cylinder count so v8 memcal goes with a v8 ect. But what else is there and what does that stuff do?

I can think for four basic functions to the Memcal. Cylinder Select, PROM Chip, Knock Filter, and Limp Home Mode.

What does the knock filter do? I have several quad 4 memcal's and a couple have different numbers/letters on them so wondering if I could use the wrong one or wrong year?
Can you post the Broadcast Code (BCC) from the Memcals? Usually the BCC's have four letter codes, like for a TBI BCC - AMUR.

1 is AMNP from 1990 grand am, ANLP, ANZF, are what I can remember. Will the memcal be different from standard to auto transmission? I have a problem with knock retard staying on once it trips knock counter until key is cycled off then back on. I have a standard trans and if I miss a gear it sets off knock counter.
1990 2.3l quad-4 8707 $8B
when I say "they have different numbers/letters" I mean on the circuit board next to chip
