Can a 7427 ECM be used on a boosted 4cyl Dohc?

I read somewhere the 1990 707 ECM on a 2.3 Dohc quad-4 grand am would not support the stuff you need for boost. I found a couple ecm numbers here like 1227749. I have several 427 ecm's so wondered if I could use one of the 427's instead of the 749?

The 16197427 doesn't natively support boost. There are a few people who have successfully used one in a boosted environment. See http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Inj...th-turbo-boost
He has several threads on here dealing with his project

    Ok thanks

I thought I read someone putting a turbo on a blazer :-).....from all the stuff I read on here I have no doubt anything is possible and seen the 4cyl option on 427, wasn't sure if Dohc made any difference tho but I posted before I remembered reading a 1228321 wouldn't work with a 2.5l with a distributor because the ignition type difference, distributor vs coil pack. The engine I'm using has a cdi and as far as I can remember 427 stuff is all distributor. So I'm assuming the two won't work together. Or I'm I wrong??

Maybe a better question....is there something to look for in a bin that says it may support boost or just find a super/turbo charged car ECM?

The '7427 PCM would not be a good choice for what you propose.

I can't find the info I want quickly, but $59 MIGHT drop into your current ECM and be a good choice.

Alternatively, a more common 1227730 ECM can be used with $58/$59 and would do what you want.

Are the 1227730's in the camero the same as in sunbird? I may have access to a camero 7730. I will look at $59 stuff, maybe make a chip and try in my 707 if there is a bin posted......

Yes, all '7730s are the same. If you do get it, I might be interested in the MEMCAL, depending on what the original engine application was.

It belongs to my nephew. He has had a 1988 firebird with 305 tpi auto. Someone stole it and wrecked for him so scrapped it, that's ECM I'm talking about. Now he has a 1992 iroc with 350 tpi auto.....latter may take awhile to get but it will need to b tuned when he's done so I'll get it eventually :-) WAIT memcal? Like whole thing chip is souldered into?

'88 will be a '7165, not a '7730. The '92 on the other hand will be a '7730. The knock detection on the '7165 is different than the '7730 and you '8707. The '7165 uses an external knock sensor filter in stock form.

The good news is that there is specialized code that will run in the '7165, that supports boost, it's very cool, though I only used it briefly. It's called $12P, originally develped for the Autralian '808 ECM, that is NEARLY identical to the '7165, except missing the components for high speed datalink to the ALDL datastream. The high speed datastream works fine in the '7165. I don't believe this code supports the knock sensor, though I don't recal for sure since it's been a LONG time since I tested it.

Yes, the MEMCAL is the entire blue and brown thing that the chip is soldered into. You will need to use a different one than what is in the ECM anyway, since you have a 4 cyl. There are some hardware settings as part of the MEMCAL that need to match the cylinder count, or you will have issues. The MEMCAL you currently have in your '8707 should work for you in a '7730 or '7165.

I panicked a little about memcal but if mine will work I guess I'm good. I'm going to try and find those def's. I was wrong about nephews car Its a 1988 so both r 7165. I'll see if I can get the $59 to work in my 8707.

$59 seemed kinda deep but couldn't find a bin. I don't have all the terminology down yet so I'm probably over looking it or something. 12p too, just need to look through it better.

    I read 1 of your posts about having to use a 454 memcal to start a 383 sbc?? Will that b a problem using 1995 gm 2500 or 3500 7427 ecm, 5.7, 4l80e on a 455 w/4l80e?
