    Car VIN Demystified

Your car's VIN number demystified. I'm posting post the page from my Chevrolet Corsica Beretta Book 1 Service Manual that explains the parts of the VIN.

I've always known the 8th digit was engine because my Scan Tool asks for it. It seems to be the key to some of these ALDL charts. Like the one pictured above is T then another chart says that is an RPO engine code LHO. So an 8th digit chart with all engine RPO would have the answer to all?

I conclude that the car's vin does have the engine type encoded by a single digit. Don't know if the letter/number 26+10 repeat or not. ALDL & chart above call this single character the VIN.

You found 126 type of engines in your file. The letter/number must repeat. I guess the would be unique per car / year or something.

anyway, in INDEX.DOC I have many more engine codes than vin codes.
