Putting pfi on 455olds need injector info

Hi everybody 😃I have a 1978 Buick Regal with a full roller Oldsmobile 455 that I am putting together a pfi system for, I'm looking at using ford truck injectors off a 460. I searched around and didn't find much info on injector identification unless it's a Japanese car. Any thing wrong with using ford 460 injectors with a 7730 or equivalent Gm ecm? I have 4l80e or 4l85e out of a ups truck and a 427 ecm and am headed to a pull ur own part yard now to browse. I haven't bought the 7730 ecm yet so if there is a better let me know 😉 or if you know of a better injector. Motor have no less than 500hp and prolly 600lb tq, it turns beefed up 4l60's inside out and rips ring and pinion gear teeth off like plastic....just in case u need idea of power for injector suggestion. Please and thank you much!!😎

Howdy. Sounds like a cool project as long as things aren't broken!

Those injectors will work with the computer but you need quite a bit more fuel than 24#/hr. 460 is a big engine but not a big hp producer. Turn fuel pressure to 70 psi and they might work but sometimes you end up finding larger injectors at lower pressure work better.

    Injector data here:

    I'd be looking at 30-40 lb/hr injectors.

Someone correct me I am wrong but I don,t think the 7730 has transmission controls. I,m sure someone will recommend an ecm more appropriate for your application.

The search box here isn't that great. The this search doesn't work try google... type in what you want to find then add site:gearhead-efi.com

The 7730 won't do trans control but the 7427 that he has now works with the E transmissions.

Can the 7747 drive high impedance injectors? Batch fired? I'm a newbie, that's why I ask.

The 7747 will drive high impedance injectors but it dies not use a "true" pfi mode strategy and it will not operate the electronic trans.

Why all the questions about different computers? Didn't you say you had a 427? That will work fine.

1project, it's two different people, with very similar names... I had to check the names myself to make sure I was following the conversation correctly. lol

I can confirm the 7747 will not run PFI well. I've tried it, and tried hard to get it to work several years ago, went to a '7730 at the time and worked much better. I hope to play with a '7427 in PFI mode at some point.

Sorry for the typo. The OP said 7427 and I typed 7747.

Sorry 'bout that. That's what I get for scanning for updates while eating lunch with the kids.

I can confirm the 7747 will not run PFI well.
I spent time years ago trying to fix an Edelbrock PFI conversion to a 7747... decided it couldn't be fixed with the 7747 installed. I have heard reports of varying degrees of success with the 427. But there are some issues, I believe, with software and hardware working correctly together when doing a pfi swap.

The '7730 never controlled an electric transmission. The closest to controlling a transmission the '7730 ever got was controlling the TCC.

Maybe thinking of 16149396? Underhood ecm with additional ram and transmission code for the 4T60E?

Cool project, I got my 1976 T/A with pontiac 455 converted to PFI a few months ago and it is running amazingly well. I went with the 1227727 ECU which is the underhood version of the 7730, Mine is a 5spd manual. As has been metioned the only transmission control this ECU can do is TCC lock up. But even so this is the ECU you want to use as the code is completely documented, and there is sooooo much information available on every aspect of it, I wouldnt even consider any other GM ECU for a PFI setup, Ive even got it hooked up to my A/C to bump the idle when the clutch engages. Pop SAUJP V5 in there, change a few parameters and fire it up and start tuning. Mine lit off on the first crank of the key after just changing the injector size and displacement and actually ran pretty well. I am running the ford red top injectors (32lbs/hr) you used to be able to find lots of them in the old thunderbird supercoupes or turbo coupes at the pick a parts but i doubt there's too many of those around any more. You might want to check out injectors from supercharged grand prix gtp's and bonnevilles those seem to be plentiful in the yards and should be enough to feed a 455 olds.
