    7747 $42 1989 Chevy 4X4 need help tuning...FINALLY!

First I want to thank everyone here for being so helpful, and so sorry to hear EagleMark is no longer with us. Judging by his posts over the years, he was a tremendous guy and asset to this forum but it looks like there are many others that are stepping up in his absence.
I have been reading/studying posts here for about a month and am about to switch out my first reprogrammed prom.

I've got a 1989 K1500 350 (Transplant, new and balanced) 5 speed (M20), 4X4, 220 TBI (GT4: Rear Axle, 3.73 ratio), with some running issues (new distributor with pickup and module, all new sensors on engine including O2, EXCLUDING, TPS, IAC, MAP, ESC). The VIN indicates that at some point in its life it originally had a V6.

Got an 'ALDU1 and CABL1' from Moates to do some data logging so I can hopefully run down some afterfire/stumble issues. Got Burn2, chips and sockets to modify a second 7747 ECM that I have while running current ECM in the truck (just in case I screw the other one up) The fuel pump is pushing 13.5 psi both sides of the fuel filter. Hooked up the ALDL up and got a good connection, I am using EagleMark's ADX, XDF, and for comparison ASDX 88 C-K Truck 5.7TBI 5 speed manual bin. The current prom is AMUD which appears to be for a 1988 305 manual trans, but was told by a fleet mechanic friend of mine that it shouldn't make any difference (which I kind of question?!) It should be AYUC according to the "BBC" lookup data sheet (thanks by the way for this resource!). Also have a stock ASDU 1990_5.7_auto 4X4 bin which seems to be closer to the ASDX 88 C-K Truck 5.7TBI 5 speed manual bin (except for a couple of cells in the low rpm range) than the AMUD.

So, given that history, here is what I did and am about to try.

    1. Acquired 1.E6~OD~OE~31 VE Correction Table for TunerPro.xlsx 2.TunerPro XDF and ADX Look up 1-24-2012.xls 3.BCC lookup.xls
    2. Did a datalog (attached) with current AMUD bin (attached). (BLM's way to high generally, very high sometimes. see log)
    3. Checked fuel pump and filter. (Is pumping 13.5)
    4. About to swap stock chips, AMUD swapped for ASDU (attached and pending)
    5. New data log with ASDU (pending)
    6. Burn ASDX (attached) to new chip (pending)
    7. Modify ECM with zif socket (Moates setup)
    8. Swap modified ECM and insert ASDX (pending)
    9. Datalog ASDX (pending)
    10. Compare bins and start tuning

Does this seem to be a correct order, have I forgotten anything BIG?

Since I am a noob to all of this I will continue to post as I tune so hopefully others can have a simplified path to tunning.

you need to down load the lates files from this sight for the 7747 ecm to get an accurate data log.

    Thanks Ony.
I'm using EagleMarks $42-1227747-V5.2.adx, $42-1227747-V5.9.3.xdf with the original AMUD bin. The latest highway data log(with AMUD) is attached above.
I haven't switched bins to the ASDU (Factory 24pin) yet but I am hopeful it will be a better starting point than the AMUD it's currently running. There is a huge difference (see attached) in the VE1 table between the two. Hope this doesn't destroy the new engine. Your thoughts?
Also, should I disconnect the battery every time I switch ECM/chip, or is key off enough?

I guess I miss read your post. in the paremeter tree apply the bpw spark patch to the chip you are going to tune it will give you more info as you data log. tunning is addictive if no one told you. ps I like the digital dash for tunning, right click on like knock counts and you can move things around and have what you want on you dash. seams I can see it better than the anologe dash.

A 305 bin will run your truck, however it will be lean (if you modified the new motor for more hp, very very lean) I ran a 305 bin in my truck for years because I thought I had a 305. When I figured it out, and replaced the chip with a 350 bin, wow did the truck run better.

Going to try it tonight then data log again. Good to know it won't trash the rebuild. Thank you Jim.

This is good as gold to me right now. A great place to start. I owe you lunch or a beer or something.
Thanks Brian. Will be posting a data log very soon.

"AMUU was superseded to ASDX". best to start with the latest factory update...

Try this for a starter bin ..stock ASDX bin, with a modified timing table and patches applied (spark/bpw in data stream),egr/hiway cruise are disabled..

Which modified BLM VE correction table to use?

Burnt the chip that CFI Z51 uploaded (stock ASDX bin, with a modified timing table and patches applied), loaded it into the zif modded 7747, did some data logging. Man what a difference, both log AND feel where as different as night and day. Now I have run a second data log, dumped it into the Excel worksheet and am going to burn the chip/log again.
    My questions are these.

    1. Do I use the averaged corrected BLM table or the non_averaged?
    2. What patches, if any, do I remove after the tuning is where I want it?
    3. Do I enable Highway/EGR when I'm done?

Thanks for the assist in advance. I will upload the final modded bin for comments when it's done. (Also thinking about making a tutorial with pic's for the complete noob such as myself, from beginning to end with the steps I took to get to the final product.)

Not sure if this will help you but i had much better tuning success zeroing out ve2 table and adding it to ve1 table. Not everyone does this but there are some great posts here explaining this.

Amazing what a little timing will do for these old trucks ...

Dave W has a more aggressive timing table for the 7747 posted HERE..if your looking for even more performance...

1)..you want to use the averaged table for ve ..some hand smoothing will most likely still be needed as the spreadsheet tends to overshoot at times..and yes add ve1 an ve2 together as hammertime suggests as it will speed things up ....
2)..the patches don't need to be removed.
3)..yes you can enable egr and highway lean cruise when you get the ve table where you want it ,
personally I leave them off,as most of my tuning is more for performance then economy/emissions ...
