    93 chevy lumina 3.1

I have a lumina that I use for going back and forth to work in. I have had an issue with it when it gets cold outside, and have been told that the computer has had issues in the past. If I track down all other problems and find out that the computer is at fault, is it an item that I can just be reflashed with the oem file? Is there a tester that I can use that would for sure point me in the direction of the problem. I would really love to get this thing reliable so I can put the Suburban in the shop and start on it full bore. I didn't drive it home, it didn't want to cooperate to get home so I drove one of the pool cars home. I have never thought of doing any tuning on it, but I guess I am wondering if my hobby could be a possible repair for this car.

Its a 93 lumina with the 3.1, I don't remember if it has single or dual cams in it. Does anyone even have the files for something like this?

Thanks guys, I really am learning on the fly!!!

It will be a single cam. Only the 3.4 was available with multiple cams in the 60* V6 family, excluding very recent iterations.

The ECM should be a 1227727 or equivalent ECM in that car. I know '93 was also a first year for the Flash based OBD 1.5 PCMs, on the 3100 in those cars.

Reading the actual ECM/PCM number will help to determine what can be done with the ECM/PCM.

That is located in the same place as in the suburban, behind the glove box? Yea, I know stupid question, but if I don't ask, with my luck it would be located behind the left rear inner tailight cover on the starboard side. lol

What does the - Flash based OBD 1.5 PCMs, on the 3100 in those cars. - mean? No I don't know how to quote either. I can build the hell out of them, just add technology and I'm lost.

The letters are body style, I don't know them all but like F is Camaro, and Y is Corvette, and B is Impala. Don't know what a Lumina is?

I had the car towed to my storage lot for toys yesterday, I'm heading over there now to work on some stuff. I haven't needed to get power or any creature comforts installed there yet. Had the place since I got out of the service, built a pole barn 4 years ago so I could work on stuff out of the weather. Last year I added a genset, air compressor and welder, guess its time to get internet now too! When I get home I'll post up the specs of the car and what I found out. Thanks guys for the support, been a long last few days, glad to know I have some backing in this area.

Got the info and found the computer, under the coolant overflow tank on the passenger fender.

    the sticker says
    Service 16149396 BDJS
    86BDJS M231251017
    16186551

    4 codes
    12
    33
    35
    44
Hard to start cold, will not idle with out help, my dad and I made an old school 'hand throttle' out of a piece of twine and an eye bolt in the dash. Need to bring the idle speed up, twist the eye bolt until the idle is under control of the string, then go inside and let the car warm up. Once it's warmed up it's great. I have replaced the tps and the computer temp sensor. and I think that's it.

    Talk about a learning curve!

    Well your screwed!

Not much in that ECM thread...
    http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Inj...Information-DF

    GM

13 Oxygen sensor voltage stays between 0.35 and 0.55 volts for 60 seconds when
the TPS signal was above 4%. The engine had been running for at least 2
    minutes.
14 Coolant temperature sensor signal indicates a temperature of over 270° F
after the engine had been running for at least 20 seconds.
15 Coolant temperature sensor signal indicates a temperature colder than -38° F
    for at least 1 second.
21 TPS voltage was above 3.8 volts for 10 seconds when engine was running and
air flow was less than 17 gm/sec.
22 TPS voltage was under 0.25 volts for 3 seconds when the ignition was
    on.
23 Inlet air temperature sensor signal showed an air temperature of -31° F for
10 seconds after engine had been running for 4 minutes.
24 Engine Speed was between 2200 and 4400 RPM and transmission was not in park
or neutral and TPS was less than 2% for 3 seconds.
25 Inlet air temperature sensor signal showed an air temperature of over 293° F
for 3 seconds when vehicle speed was greater than 35 MPH.
32 The ECM opens each EGR control valve during deceleration and monitors the
change in manifold vacuum. This code is set when the change in manifold vacuum
    is outside the normal range.
33 MAP sensor voltage was too high for 4.8 seconds when throttle angle was less
    than 2%.
34 MAP sensor voltage was too low for 1 second when engine speed was under 600
RPM, or MAP sensor voltage was too low for 1 second when engine speed was over
600 RPM and throttle angle was above 20%.
35 Engine idle speed is either 300 RPM above or below the desired idle speed
    for 50 seconds.
42 The EST signal did not change when the ECM applied bypass voltage to the
    ignition module.
43 Knock sensor signal was either above 4.6 volts or below 0.64 volts for at
    least 10 seconds.
44 Oxygen sensor voltage was under 0.25 volts for at least 60 seconds of closed
    loop operation.
45 Oxygen sensor voltage was over 0.7 volts for 50 seconds in closed loop
operation with a throttle angle between 3% and 45%.
    51 MEM-CAL error.
53 ECM sees a battery voltage of more than 16.9 volts for 10 seconds.
54 Fuel pump voltage was less than 4 volts for 4 seconds.
62 Vehicle was in 2nd gear but 2nd gear signal switch was open, or vehicle was
in 3rd gear but 3rd gear switch was open.
66 A/C pressure sensor voltage was either above 4.9 volts or below 0.1 volts
    for at least 5 seconds.

44 is a bad O2 sensor or wire to it.
35 your probably causing with the warm up idle trick...
33 bad MAP which is rare or vacuum leak common check wiring...
12 should be there when your doing the paperclip test...

    Lumina = W-body

Cavalier, Sunbird, Firenza, Skyhawk, Cimmaron = J-body

Just to data log you need only one file. The .adx for that car.

The other file is the ECMs chip .bin

To read the .bin you need the .xdf

I guess I can update this to a current situation, I went out a few weeks ago and plugged into the computer. It took a few trys with different program files to get a dash, but not everything was there. I did get enough to get an 'items list' which it was partial compared to what I see with the suburban. But there was enough there where I saw an issue with the O2 sensor. I picked one up the following monday and I have it and the socket to install the next time I'm out that way. Thanks for the help boys, and I'll try in the future to keep on top of informing everyone, at least to input my notes of the days happening to remind myself of what happened.

btw these are the program files that I used to access information through TP5, it didn't give me a full dash or even allow me to 'bitmap' (I might be using the wrong terminology again) but I could at least see that there was an issue with the O2 sensor
