GM Vortec swap - what hardware / software is required ?

Background - I am very proficient with TBI (GM 7747) tuning and wiring. I've built several of those systems on old Jeeps and have a Moates APU. I'm also Sr. Systems Engineer and very proficient with computer hardware/software.

Goal - buy a GM vortec engine (most likely the 8.1) and install that into my Jeep (mated to my existing NV4500). I'm not particularly interested in actually 'tuning', but rather disabling VAT's and maybe tinkering with the bin a little bit.

I want to buy my own hardware/software (not ship the PCM out to someone).

I already have one of those bluetooth OBDII things - is there a way I can perform the work I need on my phone?

This rig is used for 4x4 purposes only. It's not a DD at all.

    Any help is appreciated!

HP Tuners is a good system to use. You might be able to find a cheap used interface that doesn't have any credits left or just a couple. You'll probably need 2 credits at $50 each. There really aren't any cheap ways to do it like there are with the 7747.

    what about disabling VATS ?

I've read that you do that in the tune and I've read that you physically cross wires.

    which is it?

I always prefer to disable in software if possible but the best method to disable the system may depend on which system you end up with. VATS is one type of system and many newer vehicles do not use it.
