    89 Chevy S10 4.3 change from 1228062 ECM to 1227747 ECM

I just want to cover all my bases here but anyway I have a 1989 Chevy S10 4.3 liter that I put later year Vortec heads on, Performer intake and a medium sized cam in. I started tuning with the stock 1228062 ecm, which has proved to be pretty tedious and difficult with the engine set up that I have. I was told by someone else that I could swap it for a 1227747 ecm because it has more parameters that I can adjust to better fit my needs in tuning and has the same pin out as my truck. My question is.... am I right to be able to use this ecm as long as I obviously change the bin to start with one close to my engine? Is there anything else I need to change? I have exhausted the amount of research I could find on the subject and want to make sure I am not missing anything critical. Thanks in advance for all your help.

8062 should be just as tune-able as the 7747. All those old 160 baud ECMs are harder to tune because the data that comes out is limited and the sample rate is low. I would find you a newer TBI PCM from a 1993-1995 S10, G-series or Astro Van, or fullsize truck. You will have to make some changes with the wiring harness by repining the connectors, but it IMO would be worth the effort.

I second the idea of going to a '93 and up ECM if you're going to go to the trouble of swapping. The 7747 should be a plug and play thing, but going with something like the 7427 will give you that higher data rate that will help you get it tuned properly. It's not that hard to re-pin the harness for the upgrade.

Stumbled upon this while researching a similar issue, this one involving tuning a 5.7 in the same build of vehicle.....

Where would I find one of these ECMs so I don't have to spend $300 for a refurb unit? There's got to be tons of them in salvage yards....

    Or in my garage ......

94-95 TBI trucks , S10 blazers , etc .... The firmware in the PCM will run multiple fuel strategy's so they were used in TBI trucks as well as CPI blazers , basically anything with an electronically controlled trans .
