    TBI on inline 6

Hey everyone I come from Amman Jordan, seeking knowledge. I am attempting to convert my inline-6 292 engine to TBI.
I did a lot of search and found the best is to use a TBI out of V8 305 engine. Can’t afford a new TBI setup. I will be stripping the donor out of all TBI related wiring and sensors.
The intake manifold also must be changed.

    The distributor must be converted from 4 pin to 7 pin. part number Delco (D1948, D1952, D1956, D1963A, D1968, D1973) GM (1988500, 1977907, 1978617, 1987714, 1976908).
What else I need to know, it is my first conversion project and the last…

For the 7 pin can anybody guide me with the wiring?

The 292 is a Chevy inline six, right? It came with a EFI distributor in... like... 1988... take a look at parts store you can get a distributor to drop in. Actually you say you need to change intake manifold? If it had a carb most guys make an adapter but in your case there is a chevy inline six that came with EFI... that would be the best donor.

Here's a link to wiring diagrams for that type ECM and distributor:

yes the engine is chevy I6, and it is stock, with 1bblr carb. in my area we do not have such engine with EFI, that is why i need to manipulate the current distributor. one of the solution is to replace the 4 pin to a 7 pin distributor.
as for the intake manifold yes an adapter is a solution put is it not sufficient, a replacement from Clifford or offenhauser is sufficient.

In the US, GM changed to using an electronic ignition system in 1975. If you have that 4 pin distributor you should be able to change to a 7 pin module without too much effort. You'll need to cut an opening in the side of the distributor for the additional pins and the new module will bolt in. The mechanical advance mechanism under the rotor should be disabled. The easiest way is to make up some small bars to replace the springs. The vacuum advance needs to be disconnected from vacuum and that should do it.

I think your talking about the EST from a small cap?

He has a 4 pin electronic.

And if he installs this 7 pin that came in large coil in cap distributor for EFI one I don't beleive he has to do any distributor or cap cutting, just wiring and disable vacuum and mechial advance.

    Or there is this way?

Well it should plug in so 2 wires on one side go up to coil, on the other side rear 2 go to pick up coil wires in distributor, then the other three go to ECM... let me see, I used to have a shematic of that... yup here tis!

    EagleMark,

The large cap HEI w/ 7 pin have a second notch for extra 3 wires to connect from engine harness. Notch is visible between 2:00 and 3:00 position in the photo. Neat idea moving the pickup coil connection outside the dizzy but I'd use old ABS twisted pair wiring to reduce interference from outside sources.

Your exactly correct, I thought you were talking the other EST which would be way more work than parts available like the one you posted.

Hi, I'm thinking about a very similar conversion, and wonder how you made out with yours. I also have a used TBI system from an 89 Chev 305, and my 292 is now bored to 301; pretty close to the size. Did yours work out OK, and was it worth the bother?
