wanting to learn to program efi

hi everybody! im looking to learn how to program efi for my custom projects. I have done several efi swaps but all have been stock setups. im working on a crossram dual tbi sbc.Id like to know how to add injector drivers to run four tbi injectors. Im really curious if anyone has ever looked into the transmission side of the ecm to make a automatic shift like a manual or auto. im wanting to be able to switch between the two modes depending on racing situation. Ive read alot of postings on here and must say everyone is very helpful. Again thanks for letting me be apart of your group.

    welcome

you can definitely get 'full manual' control over your 4l60e. i've seen it done. i just wish i knew how; i can help you -a lot- with your lt1, but i know virtually nothing about automatic trans tuning.

as far as your dual tbi setup, you might just look at getting an EBL flash unit which is already rigged up for 4 injector tbi setups, and is probably a far superior ecm than what you're already usin'. other than that, a homemade external injector driver (basically to handle the extra load) would do the trick too, or hack up your ecm. you could poach a dead tbi ecm for its injector drivers and just run them in parallel on a little homemade daughterboard or something. guess it depends how much soldering and experimentation you want.

but there's other factors, what about idle air control?... making a pipe that just links the idle control of both bodies to one iac motor would work

thanks alot steveo!! i need all the help i can get. The lt1 is a stock one from a 95 buick roadmaster. id like to improve the performance of the motor and i know computer tuning will wake it up. Not sure about the iac for the dual tbi setup im still looking for info on how to run it. ive seen the EBL flash for the setup but im trying to junk yard my project " thats simple terms for i have kids and wife and they keep me broke". can i just add another driver to run the tbi's and run the iac's with one ecm?

im with you, i have more solder than money too..

can i just add another driver to run the tbi's and run the iac's with one ecm?
that's what i've heard; never done it... looks like just getting a throwaway tbi ecm to jack the parts out of is easiest.

personally i think the ideal solution to idle air would be to use a single iac motor in a seperate housing and feed both with tubes, or just run a tube from one master throttle body to the other throttle bodys idle passage.

however if you look at an old crossfire engine, both IAC valves are just wired together in parallel.

that's not to say your TBI's iac driver can handle two motors, but i bet it'd be fine.

reading about how often crossfire idle goes whacky though... not sure that's the route i'd take.

55 dual tbi.jpgHeres a quick question on programming. the only software i have right now is Winaldl for looking at my tbi and tpi ecm. what do you recommend for for the lt1 and what am i gonna need to burn my chips for tbi and tpi. i think im gonna look into the vortec pcm for tpi to get better control over my tpi units but the tbi units im just gonna stay with the original ecm's. can i tune the lt1 from the diagnostic port ? The dual tbi motor will be twin turbo in its final form, can i support this with the stock tbi ecm?

you can use tunerpro RT for scanning, datalogging and tuning all of your current vehicles, with the appropriate ADX files.

as far as the LT1 goes, there's another cool program called scan9495 that'll work for your LT1. it's kind of handy for diagnostic work and a freebie, if you dont feel like firing up tunerpro. then there's datamaster, which is also not bad.

you'll have to buy a program called 'winflash' from the tunercat (not tunerpro) website to actually read and flash the LT1 ecm, nobody has made a free one (yet... im going to give it my best shot this winter as a project, especially if someone donates me an ECM). however there's a 30 day trial of it you can play with.

the LT1 is designed to be programmed through the diagnostic line. the chips are tiny and soldered on board, but can be socketed and removed if you really want.

i made this shoddy website with some details about lt1 tuning; there are a few details that are fairly critical for standalone LT1 swaps you might want to give it a read. http://fbodytech.com/tuning.html

if you want to help with my LT1 research effort (which will be starting again soon) let me know. i will need testers.

to burn chips for your tbi/tpi stuff i'd plan to buy a few toys from moates, including something to flash your chips, adaptors so you can run flash chips instead of that uv erasable stuff. it's a bit of an investment but no big deal.

ideally you'd invest in an autoprom which does emulation too (can tune while you drive, and dont have to keep swapping chips just to try stuff out) but that's big bucks. i hit chinese ebay stuff, and managed to get everything together to tune my last TBI for about $40 including shipping, and it was working great before the car got smashed.

yes, you can run boost with damn near any ecm, but get a newer tbi ecm with higher resolution VE and spark tables. what you run into with boost, is you'll want to use a 2 bar or 3 bar map sensor so the ecm knows how much boost you have. that actually provides less map voltage per KPA, which divides those tables in half, or into thirds. if you have an old ecm with 8x8 VE tables or whatever you're in trouble. you want to find an ecm that's been well researched, so more map-based variables are exposed so you can fix them up so driveability doesn't suffer too much. if you use the stock map sensor and leave the bin untouched it'll run, but it'll be only an RPM based tune when it's in boost, which is obviously less than ideal.

what tbi ecm are you running?

i live in mississippi and everyone but a select few of us take injection off and stick a carb on. I have a few ecms on hand 1228747,1228746,1226870,7165 and 16188051 for lt1. if there are better ecm that i need to run just let me know and im sure i could find one. Again thanks alot for all the help. id be glad to help with your lt1 research just let me know what you need. could you give me a list of the things i need to look for to burn chips for my tbi/tpi? i looked at the moates site and found the cable and program i need.
