    Definition of "Hack"

So when you guys talk about loading a "hack" like for example, lean cruise mode and other things?

Are you talking about something in the bin only or is the actual ECU code modified?

    Thanks!!

with a few exceptions, the bin IS the "ecu code".

it contains both instructions and data, so the instructions themselves can be modified right in the bin with a patch or whatever.

Bin is short for Binary file... a somewhat technical indication of the file format. Like mp3 or wav.

A hack is usually a partial disassembly. Someone has looked at the code and tried to figure out what it means then written out their work for others to use. It is not usually complete although it's often complete enough for some advanced tuning. A hack might allow one to figure out how to make a shift light turn on only at WOT and 5250 rpm in gears 1-4. Tuning software / definition file rarely contains complete enough notes to do that.

i did say 'with a few exceptions', though, a bunch of older ecms have a small bin holding a calibration and another "rom" that contains most of the actual code. those have a "bin" too, but its not one that's usually played around with.
