Keep getting VSS error code on 1227747 with chevy 350

On my buddies rock crawler which has 94 chevy 350 with a th350 trans. and a 1227747 ecm, we keep getting error code for VSS. My question is that we did not hook this sensor up to the ecm so I would expect to get an error code, but what effect is this having on the ecm? The crawler runs but occassionally dies for no apparent reason. So I am just wanting a little more info as to wether or not it might have anything to do with this sensor not behing hooked up. Also, does this error code casue the computer to go into "limp" mode? What does that mean?
Thanks for any help on this.

Tyree, does the vehicle die at sudden stops or intermittently while driving or idling or both?

The vss should run to a DRAC/VSSB then to the pcm but is not essential for operation(but dont discount its usefulness).
Do you by chance have any datalogging equipment? Would be very helpful if you did.

Does the vehicle start right back up without hassle?

It dies randomly at idle. It starts right back up immediately without any hesitation. The other night we were in some clay pits and it ran fine until we came up a hill and stopped for a moment at the top, then died. I do have an aldl hookup cable with usb for tunerpro but I have never used it yet. We are also running a chip that has the egr disabled and also knock disabled. I used moates flash and burn to reprogram that chip.
