New to the realm of tuning

I had Dave tune my Dads truck a while back and now Im interested in learning the trade myself. Been perusing the site and it seems like everything Im going to need to know is here. Just going to have to filter it all and try to put all the pieces together.

Is there a thread anywhere that goes over what specifically the XDF and ADX are? Im only seeing that you need it but not what it is exactly.

    Thanks in advance.

Ill prolly find the answer right after i send this. lol

Thanks for the welcome. I had read that thread before and I guess i just missed the 2 lines on ADX and XDF. So XDF converts binary so that we can understand what the hell its saying, right? Still dont understand the ADX though. Can you eleborate a little on its job?

The .ADX is the ALDL file, it reads the data and error codes.

    - commands necessary to retrieve diagnostic data from the ecm
    - extra commands that can be sent to the ecm to perform various functions
    - how to interpret the data so you can understand it
    - how to display the data or make it into charts or displays or whatever

(the -a- in ADX stands for acquisition i believe)

    ok i'll simplify

tunerpro is actually two totally different programs

one of them edits the program that goes on your car's computer

the other one communicates with the car itself while it's running, so it can tell what's going on.

the xdf defines the editing part, telling tunerpro what stuff can be changed, and how.

the adx defines the communicating part, telling it how to read stuff from the car while it's running.

i can make it simpler too, i did tech support for a while for people that couldn't find the 'on' button on their computer. you just have to tell me how simple to make it....

ROFL...I am sure that I will be in and out asking some pretty dumb questions from time to time trying to figure this all out. I will probably be using your abilities at some point in the near future.
