    1994 GMC v-6 to V-8 swap

we are installing a 350 into my 1994 reg cab GMC work truck V-6/auto. and want to know what we need to do as far as the ecu. Do we have to change it out completely or can we have it reprogrammed. also how to handle the vin number. if a scan tool is pulled in with the real vin it will think it is testing a v-6 so do we change the vin as far as the ecu is concered to reflect a v-8. oh for the days when you could just change engines with just two wires and some fuel lines.
    Thanks

The VIN does not and can not be altered. That would be a federal offense in most places. Just keep the engine code handy for when a scanner is plugged in.

Depending on the actual vehicle ("1994 GMC" is not descriptive enough), and what ECM is being used a simple PROP/MEMCAL swap might be all that is needed at the ECM end of the harness.

For the swap it depends on ECM/PCM number. So get that and we can give an exact answer. 1994 should not have VIN in the ECM to change. For scanning you'll need to know what to tell the tech... like scan it as a 1994 5.7L auto 1500 truck, that's it, no VIN like newer OBDII PCMs

With that PCM you can either repalce the PCM with one for a 5.7L Auto same year as transmission. Or just grab the Memcal from inside the PCM for the same. Memcal looks like the blue thing in this picture:

It's important you get one for 1994 because of transmission changes in 1995.

If the 5.7L engine you have is complete from same year your set. If a differant year you may need a Knock Sensor, it must match the Knock Module which is part of the Memcal.

the engine is a 1993, can i use the knock sensor from the v-6? guess I can buy the required KS. We are putting in a 3702 roller lifter elderbrock cam with roller rockers and an elderbrock TBI intake. And aluminium heads with 2.05 intake, 65 cc chambers and 200 runners. Will these mods require special programming.
    thanks

Yes those mods will require a complete tune, it will run on stock chip/tune but not very well.

The knock sensor has to be for a 5.7L Auto of 94-95 vintage or it will not work correctly when you have correct Memcal. The V6 will work... but not correctly. These are 2 parts that have to match engine and ECM/PCM to work properly.

Depending on what ECM/PCM came with the 93 engine it may also have an ESC/Knock Module on engine. You won't use it with the newer PCM and the Knock Sensor will not match the newer PCM.

PM a tuner like me on this forum with all the engine and vehicle specs for a price on a starter chip, then get a cable to data log to diagnose issues and fine tune.

we are going with a tune from Mark and I have ordered a data cable, I would like to run the tuning program with my v-6 just to get it set up. What files to I need to get it to log and check out how it is working? ecu 16196395 BDXJ
