I was originally setting my timing with the map disconnected and then hooking up the map after the fact. I think this is where I went wrong because when I hook them both up it runs like shit because of timing( I was blaming the map). With the map sensor connected, I need to readjust the base timing to 0 degrees and see what happens. Vac readings indicate my engine is good and I have approx 20 on the vac I also checked the vaccum elbow and electric connector to map. All looks good there. If this doesn't sound right, let me know. Im hoping this is the problem

Just set the timing properly to 0* with bypass disconnected. Then when hooked up see if it is advancing properly.

I set the base timing to zero, then hooked up the bypass wire but then it would not idle correctly unless I turned the distributor counterclockwise a little bit more and then it ran fine. It ran great and starts everytime so Im not complaning. I am just wondering why I needed to adjust further, that did not seem correct to me. I was under the impression that after setting base timing to zero that it should advance on its own without any further rotation of the distributor. Does this indicate that there is still a problem or should I ignore this?

No there's a problem. After you set timing bypass disconnected and lock dwn distributor, hook up bypass wire, clear codes and fire it up. Timing should be 16-20 warmed up and idle etc...

Im not getting any error codes on this. What could the problem be? If after the base timing is set, and then the bypass connector is reconnected, what nomal degrees of advance at idle? Is it supposed to stay zero at idle or does it become advanced? Has anybody measured this on their running tbi 350.?

Well clear codes too as it will set a error 42 when setting timing. Then when running and warm should be about 16-20*

im at a total loss. I cannot figure this out. I pulled the bypass wire apart, set timing to 0 degrees. reconnected the bypass, cleared the error codes. I did this with the map disconnected again(which I know is the wrong way) and it runs. If I connect the map, the engine wants to die and act funny so I have to rotate the dist counter clockwise to keep it from wanting to die. I just found out my aldl cable is crap and I am trying to order a new one. Does anybody understand what is going on here? My only hope at this point is that when my aldl comes in the mail, I will be able to moniter this and come up with a solution then. Until then my truck is running without the map.
