    383 cam recommendations

Just picked up some srp inverted dish pistons, 6" I beam Eagle rods, Eagle 383 crank and a Vortec block. Compression ratio is 9.8:1. I have a 91 C1500 rcsb built 700r4 with 3.42 rear. Not looking to race, just want a fun, solid, daily driver motor to throw my current top end on. Vortec heads, edelbrock dual plane with bored 650 cfm throttle body. Will probably go with 80lb. injectors. Looking for some cam recommendations to look at. Also, is it going to be a lot more difficult for me to get a 383 to run reliably with the 7747?

I would upgrade the '7747 to the 16197427 PCM http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Inj...out-Directions!

The 16197427 PCM has two timing tables and two fuel tables (near idle / off idle), which provides the ability to optimize the tuning of a performance cam at both idle and driving conditions!

The Vortec block should be a roller camshaft block, so with that in mind, I would recommend the HT383 roller camshaft. http://paceperformance.com/i-6255412...amjet-350.html

You won't need much cam, particularly for a daily driver. Need some more info for a proper cam recommendation:

Describe your exhaust system (manifolds, headers, single, dual, etc.)
    Wide open throttle shift rpm?
Are you more interested in WOT mid/upper rpm performance or part throttle response/mpg?

Been thinking about going with a 7427. Besides finding a fried 7747, do you know of where to find a plug-in to make an adapter? I just want to reduce downtime of the truck, since its a driver. That cam would make things easier, since I wouldnt have to upgrade springs or do any more work to the heads.

Shorty headers into a 2 1/2 to 3" flowmaster collector to high flow cat to 3" vortex muffler. Not sure about shift points at wot. I'd definately be more interested in part throttle response/ mpg. I turn around 2000 @ 70mph, would like more passing power response. Around town driving fun would be taken care of off of torque alone, I would assume?

Dave's recommendation for the HT383/Ramjet cam is a good one. In a Vortec headed 383 it will build over 400 ft-lbs at 3,000 rpm and around 325 HP at 4,700 with your combination. 1.6 ratio rockers on the intake valves will be very worthwhile. That cam is also easy on the valvetrain and you can purchase new for less than an aftermarket cam. Sometimes you can find takeouts on Ebay too.

Will 1.6 rockers on the intake side have any negative affects on the o2 sensor? Is my exhaust sufficient to do so? Any guide clearance issues?

You won't experience any O2 or other tuning related issues. You could actually run a much larger cam in a 383 without experiencing tuning issues; you'd just be giving up low rpm part throttle response. 1.6 rockers will be good for 8-10 hp on the top end without giving up anything down low. The intake lift with 1.6 rockers will be 0.460"; only 0.009" more than exhaust lift and won't cause any issues. Your exhaust will be absolutely fine in a street application.

What do you think about upgrading to the 16197427 PCM?

I occasionally do work for a salvage yard. Checked today and they only had one for a V6. But, I'm keeping my eyes open.

I find this test on the HT383 a bit inspirational

It's true, the 16197427 was used for both V6 and V8. The only difference is the memcal.

As a thought, I would upgrade the engine or the computer first. I think it would be a poor plan to upgrade both engine and computer at the same time.
