    possible 27SF512 chip replacement

Hey guys, I've been doing some hunting online and came across something interesting. Everyone that has tried burning chips knows our beloved SST 27SF512 is not readily available, people are even reporting issues with the ones sold by Moates. However, while reading through this datasheet I found a PLCC-32 chip that may be a good replacement with an adapter. They are still available and commonly used for BIOS on computers, plus a fair bit more memory, the AMD 29F040. Anybody see any issues with this? here is the datasheet that got me thinking. http://www.futurlec.com/Memory/SST27SF512.shtml

Don't want to sidetrack your conversation so consider this a temporary hijck...

I've not had any issues with the Moates 27SF512 chip yet and can't remember anyone here having reported issues either?

    Back to new chip idea...

There are several options for chips. The biggest drawback to some of the chips that can substitute the 27SF512 is the chip burning equipment. The Moates.net Burn 2 is a very affordable chip burning option. I own a Burn 2 and a BX32 Batupo II http://www.batronix.com/shop/program...rogrammer.html The BX32 Batupo II works great with all 27SF512 variants, including the ones manufactured off-shore. When my Burn 2 won't flash one of the 27SF512 variants, the BX32 Batupo II will!! IMHO, it's the chip programmer being used that's causing many 27SF512 failures, not the chip. The BX32 Batupo II has an auto chip ID feature that makes it extremely easy to correctly program most any chip.

Maybe that's why my AutoProm will sometimes not burn a chip but my GQ-4x will. The reason I got the Gq4x was it's ability to do the 2732a chip. But the list of supported chips is endless.

there are DIP-32 versions of the AM29F040, which i've been using almost exclusively for quite some time. generally, the only time i touch one of the SF512s is when i'm burning a finalized version of a tune.

do you use a 28 or 32 pin adapter on that? And for that matter, tell us about it! How do you install it, what direction?
This sounds like it could be a good lead, at least for my uses.

Moates sells them.... referred to as the "C3" chip. goes in a 32-pin ZIF adapter(G3), same orientation as a 27Cxxx, along with a 16-position hex encoder to run up to 16 BINs on a single PROM.

you of course, don't need to go through that much complexity, you could just run a single BIN on them, but i would take advantage of the ability to run multiple.

if i ever get this damn northstar MEMCAL adapter done, i'll be making my own with some other features to it.

Ah, that is basically the same chip in a DIP format. I only question the PLCC32 variant due to it's availability and cost, plus ease of finding a programmer!
