    Moates Autoprom battery bad?

anyone ever had to change the battery in a Moates Autoprom? it seems like mine is randomly loosing the tune loaded to it lately. It has happened 3 times in the last couple weeks that if I let it sit overnight with the emulator hooked up it will go into limp mode when I crank it in the morning.

Have you checked the voltage of the battery?

Cold weather will significantly reduce the amount of charge in a battery.

hmm didn't think of that. I guess I should bring it in the house and test it. I wonder if it's too far gone and needs to be replaced

Something I remember from high school auto shop was... (hey my memory is coming back!) at 32*f a car battery is only 60% of it's efficiency! Get's worse when colder. I'd guess this theory also holds true for all batt?

This is why the auto shop teacher, also my boss after school and weekends always had stocked a lot of extra batteries the week before a cold snap and tow truck drivers doubled...

yeah, all battery chemistries that i know of lose capacity at lower temps. as they warm up, it comes back and is visible as a rise in standing voltage. high temps cause fun stuff to happen too.

OK well just opened my autoprom. no battery... guess there is something else causing it to randomly loose the tune

I thought it had one too!

Looks like there is battery in the Ostrich and QuaterHorse for Fords does have a Batt.

I don't think I ever just left it in overnight and did not start with something that was changed? The only issue I ever had losing a tune was a wore out USB cable... but that was emulating.

Now that your mentioning loosing a tune? Sometimes guys start with the wrong bin! But then do not verify! I do have to upload a bin more then once sometimes and it does not verify? So I save the bin that is open in TunerPro and Upload to Emulator (Autoprom) and all is well.

I doubt that is cold enough to effect it. I was talking COLD, like 0 and less...

I just wanted to follow up on this with the fix. Over the last year it had progressively gotten worse loosing the tune to the point if my laptop went to sleep it would dump the tune. after a couple of emails with moates they said it had a bad NVRAM chip. they sent a new chip with a spare out and I swapped it out. I noticed a slight bulge in the side of the old chip so I would imagine something that keeps the memory alive in it blew. I looked up the part on mouser and looked at the data sheet. the documentation states the chip "Data Retention for at least 10 Years Without Power". for anyone interested the chip part number is BQ4013YMA-70N.

Had a similar series of errors in the summer on APU1. Interior temps close to 120 F. Thanks for the p/n.
