    wideband logging

    playing with an innovative MTX-L (which is the gauge-based wideband), using the ol' ac pressure sensor input trick for logging.

    im using 0.05896N+7.35 for conversion, which i calculated myself, then found forum posts from other people that had used the same conversion (just to confirm i wasnt out to lunch.)

    i'm getting weird results:

    open air (5v) which is maximum reads 22.39 on the gauge AND my datalogger (correct)
    the datalogger reads 7.35 afr if i unplug the lead, which is also correct
    but anywhere in the middle, 11.1:1, 16:1, the datalogger is approx +1 over the gauge reading.

    im pretty sure my connections are OK, i use a ground that's common with ECM ground...

    anyone ever run into anything like this?

    mm i just noticed in the manual that this thing can be programmed with a curve just for analog output

    im going to get that config software up and check to see if it's still set to factory defaults or whatever. maybe it isn't.

    Someone else had that issue with the MTX-L and had to change to 0 = 10 AFR and 5 = 20 AFR.

    Conversions for 256 bit 0 to 5 volts!

    For the LC-1 WideBand 0V = 7.35 AFR and 5V = 22.39 AFR.
    AFR of 7.35 to 22.39 is a difference of 15.04 divided by 256 = 0.05875

    Conversion for this would be:
    (X * 0.05875) + 7.350000
    Adding the offset makes 0 volts 7.35 AFR

    For other Wide Band controllers that have 0V = 10.00 AFR and 5V = 20.00 AFR.
    AFR of 10.00 to 20.00 is a difference of 10.00 divided by 256 = 0.0390625

    Conversion for this would be:
    (X * 0.0390625) + 10.00000
    Adding the offset makes 0 volts 10.00 AFR

    thanks thats just what i was looking for! i'll do it up right now and see how it goes.

    i just hate how every damn time you unplug this thing it assumes free air calib, so every time i want to take it out and bring it in where i have a serial port, i have to purge my exhaust or pull the o2 out

    i figured a good trick for open air calib, though, since this wideband is in a really hard spot to access now... just hook a vacuum cleaner up to the exhaust and disable the injectors while cranking for a bit. purges the living hell out of it for open air calib. in a short amount of time, the calibration reads just like it did in totally free air.

    guess i could do that too, but its not even my wideband, just borrowing it, and i dont need a usb to serial adaptor for anything else.

    i have tons of desktops with serial ports, its just my laptops that are lacking

    That was another advantage of the Panasonic CF-74 I got for tuning, it has a serial and USB ports! For an old laptop it sure had everything needed like the no glare screen too and also survives the occasional panic brake where the laptop hits the dash before the floor... Even has Bluetooth. Pretty advanced unit for it's time and new enough to have the Duo core processor so it's not slow either.

    Just another reason I use 14point7.com wideband products. All of their products (that have PC connectivity) use onboard USB ports.

    I used to own 2 Innovate LC-1 widebands. One was used for tuning other people's cars, and one was "permanently installed" in my car. When I couldn't get a couple of my USB to serial adapters to work when I needed to tune my boss' '62 Suburban that I had recently done an engine swap on, I bought the 14point7.com SLC_DIY (v1) and have been a HUGE fan since, no free air calibration needed, easy connectivity to a PC, though there is no adjustment to the linear output, but then again, I've never need to, but it has so many other features that make it more value than any other wideband I have used (have used a couple others that were borrowed, or installed in other people's cars).

    The other thing you can do, if the difference of actual (as read on the gauge) as compared to what is in TP/datalogger is always off by the same amount, say as you suggest by +1, you can simply offset the formula to compensate, by adding "+1| to the end of the formula. Depending on how your datalogging software uses teh formulas you may have to use brackets to make it work correctly.

    i wrote my own datalogging software.

    i definitely wouldnt buy an innovate, but i got one on loan for free, so i figure i might as well give it a shot

    i haven't had a chance to try what mark suggested, though. we'll see how it goes today.

    Using a vacuum cleaner really sucks...

    i'm definitely making progress, and realizing how super useless the narrowbands were.

    my ve tables are starting to look like what i'd naturally expect for this cam, i have my maf tables closer (the stock curve was rich on the bottom and lean on the top), and i managed to get idle to 14:1, way less disgusting than the 15:1 that closed loop forced on me.

    i got closed loop running again, and tuned PE to what i figure should be 13.0:1 (stock bin is ~11.1:1), and took a drive to see how close to target i was

    but i couldn't get it into PE. it was a bit damp, and it wouldn't hook up on the highway anymore, even from an 80kph roll it almost broke loose into oncoming traffic.

    i think that's a good sign. or maybe i need new tires.
