"It didn't say anything about it in the directions..."

The title is a quote from my buddy who's truck I'm trying to tune for him. It is in regards to the ESC module and some post he saw on the web. Story goes like this...

Hooked up the laptop to the aldl and what did I see? Knock counts just running wild, thats what. So after verifying the knock sensor connector is attached I look om the intake and there is no ESC. Mind you this is a 1992 1500 '7747 converted from '299. So he was "reading" that he didnt need that little black thing ao he cut the pigtail off the harness and tucked the rest in the wire loom. So im looking around, dig out the wires, then asked him where the rest was. He went to his garage, dug around, found the pigtail in one milk crate and the esc module in another. Wired it together and did some tuning. Imagine my surprise hen the knock counts were non existent. Still have some tweaking to do but it runs waaay better than it did before.

Anywho wish yall coulda seen the look on his face as he said, "it didnt say anything about it in the directions.

tune in next week when we see how much timing this lil 383 can take on pump gas. ;)

That's what some BB vehicles do that come with no knock sensor. Knock counts just winds up to 255 and starts again. Of course their knock retard is zerod out as well...

I just don't understand people's thought process, as in why they perform extra work when it's not needed or refuse to do work that is needed.
The man who says something is impossible, is usually interrupted by the man doing it.

Tell me about it lol he has created so much work for me in the time ive known him hes lucky I dont send him a bill.

Eaglemark, this is a 383 sbc and his truck came with it he just thought it looked better without thos extra wires and stuff lol.

I have to make sure this runs better when im done than my stock 1500 does or hes gonna be pissed. Hes dropped a ton of cash, his time and mine into this thing.

I think a 299 is a plug and play with a 1227747-16144288 if you don't remove any sensors.

Yes it is, in fact I prefer the 299 ECM.

You are corrct ony. They do plug and play, espcially when u wire in th esc module lol.

Seriously though it does plug and play quite easily. Only reason i made him change was that i was having issues with the '299 bins. Everytime i burned one it hated it. Put my '7747 with asdu bin and it ran much better. Been tuning it based off the asdu and seems to be progressing nicely. The one thing i noticed in th 299 is higher res ve tables. Other than that it didnt like me fir some reason. ;)

If someone had spent the time in the 299 as they have in 7747 it would be a better ECM. But there are so few of them it goes un-noticed like the 7060...
