    4L80/4L85 swap pointers.

Contemplating swaping my Getrag 5 speed for a 4L80/85 and curious what issues I might have with VSS since my 89 doesn't have remote DRAC module. I have located a 4L85 cheap enough but not quite sure of the year module, hope to find out more info tomorrow. From my searching I found that the 99-00 4L80 to be best fit for me, but this 4L85 is clean and easy to obtain. Guy thinks its a 02ish model and its currently coupled to an 8.1L. I'm Currently running the 427 PCM.

The newer ones just require cooling line modifications compared to the older ones. Adding a DRAC is not overly difficult nor is adding the transmission harness. I am running an 02 Express trans on an 02 4L60E tune with a 4L80E trans segment swap. I would recomeend a B82 converter as a minimum.

The B82 converter is for the 4.3 correct? I'm undecided on it vs the 5.7 converter as my truck is a 4x4 and I'm looking for good hauling/working torque.

I believe my truck has the DRAC intergrated into the cluster (88-89 thing) as I have no white box behind glovebox. Ive been reading conflicting information on the web (if you can imagine that lol) But it seems since my truck is 4x4 and my VSS will be coming from the transfer case I should be ok still.

I tow with the 4.3 converter in mine. Footstalls about 2,200 rpm behind my cammed L31. My torque converter locks in 2nd gear at 55 mph even at WOT so it stays cool. With 3.42s you need all the help you can get to get you rolling. I could do nearly 60 mph in 1st and 100 mph in 2nd with 3.42s.

You will need to upgrade the DRAC to one for a 93+. The earlier ones do not output the correct signal to operate the transmission. 4L80E uses both a VSS and Input Shaft Speed sensor.

I added an aftermarket factory style transmission cooler and lines for a 1-ton van. Combine with the radiator cooler it always runs cool.

One of these days i'll get my 14 bolt 3:73 built and that will help a lot. DRAC, cooler lines, wiring, all that stuff easy for me to come up with. I've been working in a salvage yard for 15+ years. I'll definitely run an external cooler.

    Thanks for the info!
