Requesting a review of some log files. (minor update)

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I am wondering if i could get better mileage.

Specs on the vehicle are as follows:

    1985 S-15 extended cab truck
1992 3.4 engine using edelbrock intake with the gm tbi 220 throttle body with the 4.3 injectors and running about 12-13 psi on fuel pressure.
    700r4 tranny
    3.73 geared rear

Using a modified ADSU bin in the 1227747 ECM. EGR is disabled.

It's been a while since I have messed with the tuning, but doing the old fashioned fill the tank up, drive, and fill the tank up, it appears that I am running about 22 mpg. The block has about 125k on it and compression is good on all cylinders. Everything else is stock.

I've included the bin file, a log file several days after the programming of that bin into the prom, and a log file from last night.

I'd say that 75% of my driving is highway.

Thanks for any help, and thanks to EagleMark for the help to get me this far.

you might try putting that highway lean cruise patch to your bin.

Found the thread about the highway lean cruise patch.

    http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Inj...on-1227747-ECM

I'll do that this weekend and get some logs.

Is the ESC Done patch required?

    ESC patch is more important!

There is a patch built into new $42 file so no need to do it the hard way as in that thread anymore.

Missed your post, sorry, I'll look at your log later.

So this new $42 has both patches done in a friendlier format?

Are you referring to the patch or the log files I posted?

You can't ask for better BLM readings. But looking at yuou VE1 table it had some pretty bad spikes and dips. I smoothed it out for you. Compare to the bin you posted. Use it for next datalog BLM and VE fixer spreadsheet and it should come out easier.

Alos not a sign of knock! I don't know your motor well but fairly confident it can handle more then 20* advance at your 45-55 MPH range I was looking at. I added 1* to your spark cruise area and smoothed it. Compare and see! If not knock you should see a little more MPG, if so go another degree.

    HTH!

Hey Mark, for some reason, I never got a notification of a reply to this thread.....

In any case, I did notice that my spark advance never seemed to get that high, but then when I am cruise speed of 55-65, my rpm's don't seem high enough for an earlier spark. But then I don't know if the "all in" when referencing carb and vacuum controlled ignition is supposed to be similar to EFI controlled spark.

Does this BIN you have created have the ESC/higway lean cruise patch added to it?

    Edited to add:

I did see that the veadjusted2.bin does not have the Highway Lean Cruise patch applied.

Do you want me to run the veadjusted2.bin, upload the data logs from a couple runs on that before we try applying the patch?

It has been forever since I tuned a cast-iron head 3.4 but I seem to remember running around 34-38* of timing at highway cruise of 2,200 rpm @ 70 on my TBI PCM run 3.4 Camaro engine in the 87 S15 Jimmy.

My Grandmothers 03 Alero aluminum head 3.4 likes 42-46* of timing at cruise. With HP Tuners I created a tune that gained nearly 6 mpg highway in that car and gave a nice torque increase. Grandma has a little bit of a lead foot.

This is a stock aluminum head LA1 3400 spark map from an 03 Alero. The left side of the map is light throttle and cruise area, about 2/3-3/4 across the right is WOT area. Its been a while, but I think it maxes out around .48 with blips around .52.

I was just commenting it needs some spark and showing how to add it 1 degree at a time with smoothing so you could compare and learn. Fast has even mentioned much more compared to your 20 but I doubt you'll get all he had in a Camaro in your truck. Same for the VE table, compare mine to yours, look in graph mode. But with the smoothing there it would have to be data logged again to be sure all is well.

You want VE perfect before enabling HLC. So yeah go ahead and post a log with that new bin. I can apply the HLC patch for you but you'd be embarresed how easy it is now compared to the writeup of years ago!

    Thanks for that info Fast!

I do now remember that when I was running the 4 barrel carb on this engine, I had the timing, albeit I had to change the weights and springs in the distributor, set to run about 30-35 degrees around 2200-2500 rpm, if I recall correctly.

One way I was able to view the timing while driving was by using a timing analyzer. I'm sure you guys know what that is.

Somewhere around my house, I have that info written down.

I was just wanting to confirm that you wanted to run the veadjusted2.bin and logging data prior to applying the HLC patch if it wasn't applied. (I noted that in TP, it wasn't applied.

Please note my comment about the 30 degrees of timing at about 2200 or so with the carb on this same setup.

IIRC in last log I looked at you were only 20* in that range. So leave alone, log and lets re-check. Where is base timing set? Are you running EGR?
