Ideas for 4 cylinder MPFI = Toyota 22RE with GM ECM?

The kid is rebuilding his rock crawler and starting with a carb extended cab truck, so no EFI wiring. Nightmare wiring to change a carb truck to EFI truck in these toyotas.

So I need some ideas on how to run the MPFI on the Toyota 22RE? There's room in cab for an ECM, but the underhood version would be the right choice for this off roader weather, get it whether... it's in the cab or underhood.

Not sure what the injectors are?

Ignition from distributor should be easy. Or should I be attempting a DIS?

TPS and IAC are going to be challenges? Have to see what is there and if maybe a GM TB could be machined in place?

Ideas? Vehicle to salvage harness and ECM from?

TBI might be easier if he has the "old" cylinder head. New head you can use an MPFI intake. Two mpfi intakes, early and late. Later MPFI intake is better for flow and power and bolts up. Look at my page to see how I added IAC with adapter plate and Jeep 4.0 IAC motor. Yota distributor pickup should be able to trigger GM EST module. Yota turbo injectors are low impy but they put a resistor inline. The injectors from the later pfi intake are high impedance, maybe 12-14 lbs/hr?? I believe I have a set left over from my truck if needed. 7727 is best underhood ecm. Look in W body cars (Lumina & etc) to find ecm and nice, long wiring harness with plenty of extra wiring. You might be able to find a version of $58 that's set up for a 1 BAR MAP. A man named Robin Handley spent a bunch of time figuring out just what settings need to change to make it happen. http://www.furyworld.fsnet.co.uk/GMECM.html He might have posted a copy of a cal or discussed the settings on gmecm.

I'm thinking an external crank trigger for the 1228707 with DIS is an option. The '8708 can operate most any injector (maybe even just two 2.8 liter TBI injectors) and is underhood ECM. The original application for the '8708 was the 2.3 liter Quad 4, so the available code should be a good baseline to start with. The connectors from a 1227727 ECM will fit the '8708. The pic below is for an 8" diameter trigger wheel, but other diameters are just a few mouse clicks from happening.

Hmmm? Well that seems like a good parts car to start with and I think there's a couple at the JY... wonder where the crank trigger is?

    1228707 or 1228708 27C256 $8B 1989 Grand Am, Cutlass, Calais and Beretta Quad 4
    1228707 or 1228708 27C256 $A8 1990 Grand Am, Cutlass, Calais and Beretta Quad 4
    1228707 or 1228708 27C256 $6B 1990 Grand Am, Cutlass, Calais and Beretta Quad 4

Looks like $A8 and $8B we have and well defined, but don't seem to have a dissasembly for further work. Also have some wiring diagrams, cool that jumpers for injectors are right there, another plus is electric fan!

Moates G1 adapter work in this?

Preferable mask ID? Or is this something nAst1 works on?

Or are the 7727 W cars also DIS? Any four cylinder? Guess the cylinders could be changed and 4 cylinder DIS used?

The quad four code is a bit different from other GM code. Methinks it was designed by lotus. You may need to use the Q4 ignition module as well. The code may be looking for the additional 1X sensor the module creates. AMDD is "dual purpose" quad 4 code. It can be used in 8707 and 7749.

Crank trigger is in center of crank, part of casting. Sensor is in middle of block, front side. Hard to remove out here because they get rusted in place.

Seemed like a good start since it's already 4 cylinder MPFI, DIS, one car and all parts including harness?

Found some more on the 1x... just don't hook up and run $58...

I'm thinking the 1x is integral with the crank trigger wheel, has an extra notch.

reluctor wheel is identical to what the DIS 60V6 units use. would need the Q4 ICM, i IMAGINE any of the 7727/7730 native masks could work almost perfectly on the 8708(in the event that someone were to want to run something other than the Q4 native stuff), some code tweaking may be required. from, what funstick was describing, essentially need to make 64KB BINs, fill 0-3FFF with anything, fill 4000-7FFF with FF, 8000-FFFF will be code/calibration. kind of odd to be necessary, but i've never messed with the 8707/8708 before. maybe it's because he was using $58, which were originally 16KB BINs, in which case those above numbers are wrong. if i had a 8708, i could hook it up to my testbench pretty much immediately since i have it designed for the 7727/9396.

i do have a basic disassembly of A8 going, i keep meaning to dig further into it, just get caught up in other projects though.

actually, GM made a few other OBD1 DIS 4 cylinder setups... the 2.2 as found in the cavaliers also uses the same reluctor setup? uses the same coilpacks as every other DIS unit of the era(northstar/3800/3x00/etc). the 93 ICM(probably other years as well) appears to be swapper friendly, uses a lot of the same signals as everything else.

the later iron dukes were also DIS. appear to use the 6 at 60 + 1 at 10 wheel common to the 60V6 and 2.2 applications.

here's some quick diagrams for both. http://imgur.com/Utht0Cp,T8uI2EV

so even if the Q4 setup seems to difficult to work around, there two are almost plug and play for anything running DIS already, just potentially need to change signal offset and you're done.

    1X made by IGN module.

Funstick full of poo-poo. Was trying to get me to give up DIS settings while claiming to others he had solution. When I caught him telling stories he claimed GM engineer had given him a ton of info, and he was going to send it to prove he was right. Nothing yet, 8 years later. In fact, never heard from him again. Shortly after that he was the hero by claiming a success with 8707.

8707 has some extra hardware. Possibly for 1X detection. May work without 1X if using AMDD. I don't believe 7749 cars used 1X. Pull 1X from car on vehicles so equipped and get instant no start. Put $58 or $8D in 8707 on test bench and get no injector triggering. No 1X supplied but code had no way to use it anyway.

2.5 cals another solution but not sure if they will work in underhood 7727.

the 90-92 2.5 luminas weren't port injected, but they did run natively with a 7727. but i'd rather start with code that was meant for port injection anyways, just rip the DIS stuff from either an early 2.2 or late 2.5. could always grab the crank angle offset, dwell, etc code from whatever ends up getting used.

looking on rockauto for an interchange, the 2.2 DIS ICM was largely a 92-93 car item, with the 2.2 S trucks using them 94-95.
2.5 DIS looks like it would be easier to find, looks like all duke applications from 87-92 used that ICM.

eagle mark, I had a 89 2.2 Corsica that got 32-33 consistent mpg, might consider them parts its about the same size engine. 96 model 2.2 , 27 mpg nether one had been tuned, I think the 89 had lean cruise it would go to 15.0 afr on my snapon scanner.

The OHV 2.0 used DIS starting in '87. IIRC it is swap friendly as well, with a harness connecting the ICM to the CPS. Was it only the OHC that used that ICM with integrated CPS?

The crank trigger wheel is a 6+1 trigger wheel, the same as the 60*V6, odd I know, but it works, somehow.

pretty simple actually... the 60V6 ICM just lets every 1 out of 2 crank sensor pulses appear as the 3X toggle(with the exception of the 10* offset pulse). the 4 cylinder ICMs just need to have 1 out of 3(and skip the 10* offset pulse).

here is an 88 cavalier 2.0, looks like it would more or less act like the 92-95 2.2 setup? not sure why the 92-95 diagram shows it as intenal... it has an external connector for it, kind of odd.
