    JUNK L31 Top End

Well I am officially DONE with the factory L31 JUNK top-end. When I put my L31 in the Express in 2006 I had to put the MFI spider in it. Well the spiders fuel pressure regulator is leaking into the intake. Went to remove the intake and the crappy plastic ended up cracking around the injector tower. I was going to just replace the regulator with an aftermarket equivalent and bump the fuel pressure toward 70 psi to combat my current 85% duty cycle, but after cracking the composite top, I am altering my thinking. My old 83 G20 is about to donate its TPI setup with its siamese ported Edelbrock 3817 base, siamese ported old style SLP runners, ported plenum and 58mm throttle body. I may also try to bolt the doug thorley tri-ys on, it looks like the Express chassis might just have the room I need to squeeze them in. I will be modifying the fuel rails to use AN fittings and move the fuel feed lines to the rear from the front by tapping the fuel rails for AN fittings. If I get industrious I may just pull the whole 350 out of the 97 Express and put my old 83s 383 in its place. It has been sitting over 3 years and until today had not run in 6 months, but a freshly charged battery, a few gallons of gas in the tank, twisted the key, even with a sticky IAC it fired right up and runs great other than the 1,600 rpm high idle. The tingy, ticking, banging noise is from the flowmasters on it, never have been a fan of them on this engine, but never felt like changing them. I am also considering picking up a propane dual fuel conversion setup for SFI and a DOT propane tank. It would be nice to be able to drive around for 1/2 or less the price of gasoline. The 383 put down 380+ RWHP and 430+ RWTQ the last time it saw the dyno and that was on a 7730 tune that had never even been datalogged or seen a wideband prior to the dyno day. I know I can squeeze more power out of the setup with the 0411. The one thing I know for certain EITHER way I am going to have to look for a 4L80E and see if I can get the gurus at HP Tuners to perform a 4L80E segment swap for me. The other thing I know is the Express is going to need some form of locking rear differential as the 3.42 open gearing is just not going to work.

I hate pulling engines from vans. Not bad to work on after you get the hang of pulling the doghouse and reinstalling it proper so now leaks. Vans are all I ever had when I lived back east, had custom vans from the 70s so I'm a fan of what your doing with them today.

As far a Flowmaster, they are right up the street from me and I've seen the operation, fancy looking... but... Welders are minimum wage for as long as they last and there's a ton of kids out of NIC welding class here in town to take their place...

When my Vortec intake kicks the bucket or my income changes I just got to have a Edlebrock Vortec Pro-Flo XT, they are just Sexy!

Yea they are a nice intake, especially with around a 90mm LS1 style throttle body on it. I was more interested in feeding my TPI TORQUE addiction however. It is not hard to get over 400 HP and 450 ft/lbs out of a roller cam 350 vortec with a modified TPI on top. The 383 made even more, this is the aftermath of cooking what was left of an old set of 295/50R17s. Even with 3.08s and the stock 1,800 rpm converter, it easily spun the tires in first, shifted into 2nd and kept cooking tires at about 3,500 rpm in 2nd until they were anhilated. The weaker, narrower marks you see on the left was my brothers buddies 2005 4.6 Auto GT Mustang. I took him for a ride on that country road and at that time had the van stripped down to about 4,600 lbs. He was in total denial until we lined up next to each other and I pulled him by about 8 car lengths to 80 mph. This was all after him talking smack about how fast his new Mustang was. The funniest part of this story is the kid was so spoiled, his dad actually bought this car after he refused to drive his sister's 03 GT because it was slow. My brother ended up picking up the 03, made a few small mods and walked all over the 05 too. When I raced the stang I had stock long tube runners on it and a 700r4 that just about refused to shift 1-2 at WOT without bouncing off the rev-limiter a couple of times.

For a truck or van I'm on board with what your doing creating a torque monster! Have no need for high RPM. Not sure how that Edlebrock intake would play out there, hurt or help, but it's still sexy!

Right now I'm broke and the truck is just about perfect with 116k on it... so I'll be watching you!

Yep...Torque monsters are fun.....Just glad I have a torque monster of a low 14 second daily driver while I put this one down to swap parts around. I just hope my old 5.7 can put down the power this 5.6 does. 388 RWTQ @ 2,900 and 296 RWHP at 4,900. The valve covers have not yet been lifted nor have the exhaust manifold/primary catalytic converter assemblies been touched. Long tubes add about 20 RWHP, a good exhaust another 20 HP at redline, and a 100 shot of N20 should let me see 400 RWHP and enough torque to push this 5,400 lbs monster down the road.

I'd put a cammed eagle head 6.1 in it before I went LS.

So what's that van weigh? I scaled my 1998 Silverado ECLB 2wd the other day at 4950. Other then wider tires, aluminum wheels and a tonnou cover it had no more then 100 pounds of stuff and half tank of fuel.

My first introduction to toque was in high school, my auto shop teacher and after school boss let me drive his new Lincoln Continetal Mark 4, man what a looooooong hood! Anyway highway speed of 60 and half throttle was 80 in a heartbeat. Guess that's why big inch luxury car motors like it and Caddy were so popular swaps especially in 4x4s

Depends on how many tool boxes I have stuffed under the rear sofa bed and how much gas is in the 30+ gallon tank, but it is somewhere between 5,800 and 6,200 with me in it.

    My Ram had a stock head 5.7 with only a 212/212 @ .050 cam.

I would still rather stick with a good running 383 and perhaps a small nitrous shot.

Torque monsters and heavy vehicles...lol. My plan is to one day (if I ever get the money) is to rebuild a cadillac 500cid and put it in my cherokee. I already have the 500, bought it years ago. Its just been setting torn apart wrapped in garbage bags in storage since then. It needs a complete overhaul.
I think last time I weighed it, my cherokee was 4600lbs.

I've been kicking myself for not going 383 when I did my truck engine. The extra stroke would help a lot. This 357 isn't as impressive as I was expecting. But I'm sure the 3/4ton drivetrain and dump truck trans have something to do with it. haha

    91 Beretta "SS" - 260hp 3400 MPFI / HM282 5spd (7730/$A1) sold! for crazy money...but I miss it
    94 Silverado Z71 - 300hp Vortec 357 TBI / NV4500 5spd (7427/$0D) gone but not forgotten

I have always wanted to duplicate this engine. It made over 425 ft/lbs of torque from 2,400-5,100 rpm with peaks of 487 ft/lbs @ 4,000 and 416 HP @ 5,000. All from a set of production vortecs, a 210/220 roller cam on a very stock EFI friendly 114* LSA. My build will have a touch less cam and siamesed SLP runners. Whoever said 1 3/4" header primaries and dual 2 1/2" exhaust could not make torque!
