    New guy...where to start?

    Here's what I'm looking at:
    1983 CJ7 with a donor 4.3L V6 (1989ish?)
Borg Warner T5 Manual Transmission (Non-world class 5 speed)
    ECM - 1227747
    PROM - AKMH

    What I've done:
Replaced O2 sensor, CTS, IAC, plugs, dist cap, wires.
    Removed, cleaned and re-gasket TBI.
Eliminated EGR (ran like hell with it connected even after I cleaned it and replaced the gasket).
Started Logging with Tunerpro RT - Lots of data, minimal understanding.
I've been chasing a smooth idle and better fuel consumption for about 6 months now and I'm at my limit of what I can figure out on my own.
Read so much stuff my head hurts!

    Issues:
Error code 24 after engine gets up to temp which causes the idle to go up. As I said, I've read until my head hurts and, depending on which forum, I've found 2 different error code definitions for this - VSS or MAP.

    Questions:
How do I fix the error code 24?
Would I be better served swapping out the AKMH Prom (Auto trans) with a APAB prom (manual 5 speed) or will it make a difference at all?
Do I need a VSS? I don't think there is one on there now.
What should I look at to improve my idle and fuel consumption.

I humbly ask for your help getting Bertha on the right track. Thanks, John.

Code 24 is the VSS, you can add one in a speedo line. Does help, can also run without and turn off error code when adjusting the chip.

Yes you'd be better off to start with a manual trans bin file.

Post up a log and we can get a better idea of what's happeneing...

Here's the first log I captured. I used the ARPA.bin and 4E.xdf. Hope this helps shed some light on my problems. Thanks for your help.

make sure you got the basics down.

Fuel pressure----check and know your pressure. It rarely hurts to increase the psi above OEM.
timing---make sure your dizzy advance matches your bin.

Curious why you started with a 7.4L Man bin for 1228747 ECM in $4E for a 4.3L engine? $42 is the definition for 1227747 and has bin files and the ADX and XDF files for TunerPro are way more advanced then $4E

Can't tell much from that data, just a little lean. If you really want to know what's going on in data you need to move up to TunerPro RT software and files. Just don't have any data in your file to look for problems?

I was trying to figure out how to use the program and I didn't know what the ECU / PROM was. I pulled the ECU from behind the dash over the weekend and cracked the case to determine what I actually have. I've since downloaded the $42 bin, adx and xdf files and will log more data this evening. I am using TunerPro RT software and files so, hopefully, the next logs will be better. Thanks again for your help.

chevmasta - I just replaced the fuel pump and the pressure is good. The dizzy is another challenge. The PO replaced the timing cover with a generic one so there are no reference marks to go by. After disconnecting the EST, I got it as close as I could by ear. I know this isn't even close to exact, but I don't know how to set the timing without reference. Is there any way to do it with the TunerProRT software? Or what is the best way to find TDC without the timing reference marks?

That's an issue! Does the balancer still have the mark? Run number one cylinder around to compression stroke and find where it is top, best way if possible through spark pug hole would be a dial indicator. Then make a marker for balancer to line up.

Although there are ways to see timing in TunerPro, it's not accurate without base timing of distributor set.

The balancer still has the mark. I'll try a dial indicator this weekend to see if I can verify TDC.

Here's a new log with the correct $42 bin, adx and xdf files. I started cold, went out to the Interstate and did a 10 mile loop. The CEL came on around 555 when I was back on my driveway. Am I sending the correct file or are you looking for a different format?

I'm determined to figure this out.

The XLS file for Excell can be handy for doing tuning and striping out bad data and using only good data.

But for diagnostics the standard xdl file that TunerPro records and using the TunerPro adx file to play it back is supreme!

    Are you using WinALDL?

Need to move up from ancient technology to TunerPro RT, can download here:
    http://www.tunerpro.net/downloadApp.htm

Then get XDF and ADX files here:
    http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Inj...Information-42

ADX file is for datalogging, XDF file is for changing your bin file.

Aha...I'm using TunerPro RT version 4.14. No wonder it doesn't work. I've downloaded the newest version and will try logging again tomorrow. I hate wasted effort.

Wow! Cool! Haven't seen that in awhile?

Make sure you get the new ADX and XDF from link above. I've done a lot of work on them.

We can walk you thru this with a little time. I'll download those files and take a look at your log.

I'm not a pro......so take my words with a grain of salt! But I won't intentionally steer you wrong!

which bin are you using now?

are you actually flashing your own chips now?
