tbi 454/700r4 swap from carb 383/700r4 originally tbi350/4l60e

Well retyping this again. Hit submit thread and lost everything i typed. What a mess from the title huh? Heres the deal brother yukon was 1995 5.7 tbi 4l60 truck. Decided to do a carb 383 and keep the 60e. Truck did fine for several years until the 60e gave up. Came down for a funeral and replaced the 60e with a 700r4. Back up and going again. Now the cam decided to lay down on it. Ive come across a good deal on a bone stock 454 crate engine and have all the stuff to tbi it. I have 8 months to sort out the ecm deal as i know they never offered a 700r4 behind a 454. The plan is to use the tbi ecm he has now with the harness thats in the truck to control the 454 and 700. Im aware of the differences in iac wiring that dont concern me too much.I only have a week and a half to do the swap and dont wanna run into too much un needed trouble as ill be 1000 miles from him after i leave. Im thinking i could use a stock 7.4L program with manual trans code to make the 700 work. I have some moats burning stuff here but have never burned a chip. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. I know this post is short but the one i lost was about 4 paragraphs sorry.

7.4L and a stock 700r4 = will be doing tranny soon...

What PCM? If a 16197427 then there are hacks for 700r4.

I agree with Mark. Personally I would not even try to put a 700R4 behind a 454, I know there are people who have done it, but I think you would be miles ahead to just put a 4L80 behind that big block. The 4L80 is basically a big ol' beefy TH400 with an overdrive gear and the provision for a lockup torque converter.

A T56 would be sweet behind that 454 as well, and not too terribly involved to swap one in, if you didn't have you heart totally set on the automatic that is.

I agree also a stock 700R4 behind a bone stock 454 won't last a real long time but if you go through it may last a quite a while with the right parts in it. But........

I would vote for the 4L80e as well, only issue is if this vehicle is 4WD then getting the t-case to mate up will take some work/swapping. But the 4L80e is a sweet trans, and the stock ECM will handle it.

I think maybe use the carburetor on the 454 crate engine? Then later on when the 700R4 gives up, install the TBI and 4L80E then. Keeping the carburetor helps the budget and saves time.

My personal choice for the Yukon, would be nothing like most people would do. I would use the 1996 ~ 2000 454 Vortec MPFI intake on the 454 crate engine. I would modify the original 95 Yukon computer for MPFI mode, and install a 4L80E.

The pics below are a few years old, from a 454 Vortec conversion I did.

Ive thought about the carb setup but......He uses this thing on the trails somewhat hard. We have vids of it pulling the left front tire off the ground coming out a serious mud hole. T56 is not an option with a 4wd truck. PACT raptor level 2. The trans has been beefed up quite substantially 13 vane front pump hardened input shaft 9 clutches and steels in the 3-4 pack and on and on. . He has droped some serious coin in the trans so i think he is gonna stick with that. DAVE W i bet he would love the mpfi 454 setup in his truck but it still requires another injection system and another trans. Like your engine test stand tho. Check out mine!
