    Hey folks!!!

    New Meat here,
I have been a mechanic since I was big enough to pick up a wrench but never really got into the electronic engine controls much.
I run Q-jets with HEI's on my cars and trucks and S&S carbs with points and condenser on my bikes. Yup,total caveman!
I have actually refused to get into the digital world but seems it's gonna suck me in no matter how hard I fight it. So,,,,,,here I am, ready to get smart,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I hope!

I recently had to retire my 78 ElCamino,it's a total rust bucket but it does have a pretty stout 355 that I built a couple years ago. The engine has 8000 miles on it now with absolutely no issues.
I bought a 91 1/2 ton 2WD Chevy pick up in really good condition save the motor. I call him Smoky! The anemic 305 has got 230,000 miles on it and I think it had been overheated. No antifreeze and a glob of JBweld on the left side radiator tank when I got it. It had a cold start rod knock and smoked like a freight train. If you caught the past tense it now is running antiseize in the crankcase. No more knock or smoke and got some oil pressure back. It's not long for this world but I think it will last till fall when it cools off and I can pull the 355 out of ElCie and poke it in there. I want to start gathering parts and knowledge for the swap and keep the EFI. Not having to deal with cold start warm up procedures and hot start clear floods is spoiling me. Q-jets do not like ethanol!

The ECM is a 7747 and want to upgrade it to a 7427. The 355 flows enough air for a 454 TB that I intend to just bolt on to my dual plane air gap manifold with an adapter plate. I'm hoping the long tube headers off Elcie will fit Smoky. The ignition on the 305 is all brand new and will go in the 355. I just replaced the fuel pump but it's not gonna feed that 355,it will get upgraded too.

I've been researching tuner programs and have heard nothing but good about the TunerPro RT so I'll download that and I need to buy a ALDL cable. I figure I'm gonna have to buy a burner and some EEPROMS once I start getting more familiar with tuning.
Right now I just want to see what I can do with the 305 and 7747.

    OK,start slinging sh*t,,,,,,I'm ready!!!

you'll get used to it quickly. TBI is still caveman tech by todays terms, so not way too many parameters to confuse you right out of the gate

Old scooter tramp and ASE Master Tech for 30 years here, also. Swapped a stroked 6.0 LS into my 99 Tahoe about two years ago. Throttlebody injection is a good way to get used to the technology, but it is still 40-year-old technology. Sequential port fuel injection gives you much more control, power, and fuel economy.
    Welcome to the forum,
    Jeff

    Hey Jeff,
Yeah I know it's old school sh*t but so am I. One thing I don't want to do is change the heads. Took me a month to find a set that weren't cracked and full of pins and several days of porting and port matching and doing the valve job. Yeah I have my own Sioux machine and the stones and pilots for the seats. It's got a 5 angle job,2 on the valves,3 on the seats. I would like to do a sequential tuned port top if for some reason those heads ever get McF*cked.

I see on another thread that you picked up a tuned port system. You are on the dark side now, no turning back. My 6.7 L LS gets better mileage in my lifted 99 Tahoe than my 350 ever did. Best of 16 mpg, all highway. The 350 and a best of 13 and usually about 11.5. All this and 3X the rear wheel horsepower.

No,I didn't buy the thing. After an afternoon of research I realized it wasn't going to feed my 355. Yeah I can feel Darth Vader breathing down my neck!
This 355 gets 17mpg in my 78 ElCamino which weighs 3500lbs running a Q-jet,TH350,2.70 gear and 81" of tire. I got it up to 19 once but it didn't like it. If I can get 15 in a 4200lb truck I'll be sooo happy.
I'm not doing LS. No self respecting caveman would have one!

    Cool

My truck is somewhat modified, last time I waited it was 7200 pounds, a bit of the pig. There are companies out there that will install bungs on your manifold for fuel injectors (Wilson products is one of them). As I tell my customers, there are lots of options. All you need is time and money. I lost my self-respect the first time I sold a shovel head to build a rigid frame Kawasaki.

I can see getting rid of the troublehead but a Kawasaki? Man,that is the dark side.
We got a saying around here "Better a sister in a whorehouse than a brother on a rice grinder."

    I'm just bustin' balls.

Yeah I've heard it all before. The best part was when the presidents son came up to me after a ride that went through a tunnel, WOT 8000 RPM blast, and said he wanted one. Paid for that for quite a while, but it's all good.
