I have a Fiero with a 3800 supercharged engine. This engine uses an Eaton M62 positive displacement blower. You do get instantaneous boost at low RPMs. The throttle response feel is similar to a larger engine. In fact for normal driving feels a lot like a 4.9L Cadillac in another Fiero I own. However a 3800 N/A would be plenty in this car for normal driving. Even the stock 2.8L with a manual transmission is enough to have some fun. The reality is the supercharger only comes handy in following situations:
1) merging in traffic
2) passing another car
3) playing on some windy back roads
4) bragging rights for 1/4 mile time
I think an intermittent electric supercharger would accomplish most of these.
I have heard that Volvo is coming out with car with a combination electric supercharger/turbo. Here is a link to a Garrett site where they are promoting their new electrically assisted turbo technology.

i always watch stuff like that and say that it seems like a complicated solution looking for a problem
with things like reliable ball bearing turbos, good tuning, and things like twin scroll turbos, lag hasn't really been a problem in decades on a well designed system for a street car, especially with other technology like variable cam timing both able to fill in the gap in power before the turbo spools and decrease spool time. with these technologies, a well equipped mazda cx-5 soccer mom mazda minivan makes peak torque and boost below 2000rpm, and so does my 20 year old subaru station wagon
of course on a performance engine you have lag, because you have a massive turbo that doesn't run out of huff up top, but that isn't an issue either because you aren't supposed to let off the throttle on those cars, just keep 'er pinned.
with all the lithium batteries and wiring and stuff to power this why not just bolt a slightly larger motor to a driveshaft and have torque that is full tilt from 0 rpm
