    proper VIN needed

So here is my delima. I have this 74 Chev pickup with a 455 Olds, 4l80e trans and TBI. ECM# 16147060

I do not know what the VIN was on the original vehicle. I believe it was from a 91 Suburban with a 350.

I would like to pull the codes from this, as I believe I am not getting any timing advance. It overheats on steep long climbs when towing.

You don't need a VIN for that, just jump the A-B connections on the ALDL and count the flash patterns.

If you're trying to use a scanner, the description of what each part of the VIN means should be displayed next to the digit.

Some scan tools only do OBDII and need a vin letter, my scan tool does both OBDI and OBDII, sometimes it will tell you the vin in OBDI when you look it up by year make model? Edit: Yes it does show VIN!

That said you can also use TunerPro with a cable to scan for codes and watch/record data like your spark to play back and find the issue.

Lot's of 16147060 info in this thread with the ADX and XDF files.

Unless you've done some tuning (and new injectors, fuel pressure, etc) I'd suspect you are running lean. But that's just a guess based on what you say the rig is.

As suggested you really want something like tunerpro that you can datalog while driving, but I've got an old Autoxray XP240 that I let Dad uses so he can watch BLM's at certain points, to make sure the tune isn't too far off.

Anyway, the XP240 as I recall you have to plug the VIN in, and at least for some applications it listed the entire alphabet and 0-9 for the engine VIN, no hints!

I would have figured there would be a engine VIN chart out there, but the only one I found doesn't list trucks.
    "Frankentruck" is a "1985" K5, TPI 350 '165/6E (Vortec Heads, SDPC2000 base, roller cam, headers), 32 Spline SM465, 205 w/VSS, 10b/14SF, 3.42's and 33" tires. Soon to be boxed frame, '87 sheetmetal, and TPI w/ '727

    Maybe this will help?
    1991-92 truck 5.7 V8 TBI “K” L05 w/ 4L80E

My AutoXray scan tool uses the "K" to select a vehicle. I've noticed that with a TBI conversion, I have to lie to my AutoXray to get it to work. I don't know why, but on some TBI conversions, I have to use a different engine code for the AutoXray to work. On a couple of TBI conversions, I had to tell the AutoXray the engine code was "N" instead of "K".

cars.com is a decent resource for VINs..... just have to find one that will match up close enough.
