I see my biggest mistake! I was trying to save $39 and had the free version downloaded. AM in the process of switching it out to the paid RT version, then hopefully I can proceed.

You don't have to pay for it to work. I used the free version for a long time. Works fine. Watch starting at 2 minutes in.
I would get the rt version though, but registering it won't make it work any better. It's just a timer when you first open it to wait 10 seconds.

I was talking about making sure you have the correct com port selected. Once selected, you need to use the same USB port everytime. What you are doing is telling it what port your cable is in and testing for communication. All done without vehicle, just cable and laptop.
