    replacing a 27c128 with a 29c256

    Hey guys!
I'm trying to disable the VATS in my 1989 APYP corvette. I dumped the original bin into tunerpro, then unchecked the VATS flag, and burned it into the 29 chip. No start.
Is there any "special" thing I need to do going from a 128 to 256 chip?
Also, being new to this, I used the $6E.xdf. I also found in this forum .ads and .adx files, but I didnt use them - am I supposed to? I really couldnt find a direct tutorial.
Thanks for any advice and help.
Just trying to eliminate VATS only, no fuel, timing, etc.

There is something special, yes. You need to make sure the end of the file is at the highest memory location for the chip. Generally you would adjust the start address in your burning software. What are you using for a programmer?

    Thanks for the quick response!!
I thought I read something like that here - but I couldn't remember where I saw it.
I'm using the most common TL86611 usb programmer. It seemed to work as I loaded another ROM (pac man ;) and then went back and loaded the one I burnt with no issues. I just don't know how to adjust the starting address.

In TunerPro just stack two same bins and burn chip with stacked file.

In TunerPro open stack tool, add two same files of yours, stack them to new name, burn chip with that file.

Here is TunerPro help page with full description:
http://www.tunerpro.net/WebHelp/ then choose Tools and then Bin Stack.

It's good to know how to alter programming addresses. It's not difficult to do. It looks like the TL866II has start / end address locations visible on the Chip Program screen. Start address for a 128k file in a 256k chip is 8000.

Since you mentioned Pac-Man, it sounds like you're using the programmer to play with games. Here's a post from an Atari forum on doing what you're doing with the engine file, putting a 128k file into a 256k chip.

*Note a 27256 EPROM can be used to replace a 27128 EPROM as long as it is programmed to the upper 16K ($4000-$7FFF) space.
The 27256 and 29c256 chips are the same capacity.

Also note, engine will not run with Pac Man installed. Some success using Asteroids although Hyperspace operation remains intermittent.
