How to set timing 88 5.7

I have a friend with an 88 Silverado with a 5.7. The truck is real sluggish during cranking and I've offered to check his timing for him. I know through experience with my 89 4.3 to disconnect the EST wire, but I'm not sure if his base timing should be at 0° with EST disconnected. I've searched the forum and didn't find anything, a quick google search did provide a 0° recommendation, but I'm more comfortable getting the info from this forum. Also, one Google result mentioned disconnecting the vacuum line from the distributor and plugging the leak while setting the timing. My 4.3 doesn't have any vaccuum to the distributor. I haven't yet seen under his hood, so idk if he's got any vacuum advance. Any information is welcome. Thanks!

The 5.7's are all 0 degrees with EST unplugged as far as I know. It should be on the sticker on the radiator shroud.

My 88 C1500 Silverado 5.7L has the sticker on the fan shroud. Timing is 0*. It's kinda hard to see in this picture but, it's in the upper left corner.
Edit: it's in the lower left, somehow the picture got rotated?

Not trying to start an argument, just an fyi. I just did an eprom for an '88 square body tbi the other day. Sticker was on the radiator shroud. The EST single weatherpack was on the drivers side next to the brake booster and not on the passenger like the later body style.

My '86 Squarebody is on the rad support. next body style (1988-1995) AFAIK is on the air cleaner. at least the '92 GMC c2500 that is in my garage getting worked on is. While the squarebody style technically ran until '92, I believe it's common place that 1988 is referring to the 88-98 body style.

Depends on where that silverado was made. I have a customer that has both an 89 and a 90 square body and both are OEM 350 Q-Jet setups and both came from GM with the suburban front clip. Both of his trucks have 083 heads and the bowtie intake manifold without EGR. Both were catless dual exhaust with factory style shorty headers as well. He also has a 98 2 door Tahoe with a factory TBI system.
