350 TBI + 4L60E S10 Swap Computer Questions

Hi everyone. I have a 95 S10 with a 4L60E, a seized W code 4.3 V6, and computer number 16193495. I have a 350TBI from a 92 G20 Van I am swapping into the truck with computer 16146299. I am trying to figure out the best way to get one of these computers to control the engine and transmission together. I have been browsing the forums and learning about burning custom PROMs and, seen all the .bin files, etc. A couple of questions.

1.) Can I burn an EEPROM with a program from a full size truck that had a 350TBI & 4L60E and install it on the computer in the truck (no. 16193495) and merge the wiring harnesses using pinouts from both motors?
2.) Can I grab a computer & wiring harness from a full size pickup that had a 350TBI & 4L60E (let's say from a 1996 just as an example) and run the 92 motor and the 95 transmission?

Basically, I am trying to get one computer to control the 92 motor and the 95 transmission as cheap and painless as possible.

I am not familiar with that 95 service number. Is that the underhood black box flash based ECM similar to a 96+ vortec? Does your W engine use the crank sensor and flat crab style distributor cap?

Yes the computer is a black box with connectors labeled GRAY BLACK RED BLUE and a 5th smaller connector in the middle. The distributor has the wires coming out of the side (not the top) and the motor has a crank position sensor.

Unfortunately, PCM 16193495 is the true definition of a red headed orphan nobody wants.

No simple, easy, or low-cost options for the 16193495.

Likely re-wiring the 16193495 PCM for a 1995 16197427 TBI _ PCM is the option I would choose.

Most 1995 full size pickups, vans and suburban's used the 16197427 PCM.

Thanks for the replies! So if I get a 7427 PCM & wiring from a 95 truck with TBI & 4L60E it will run the 92 engine as long as I rewire the harness for the 92 motor? Do I need to do anything with memcal/proms?

It certainly will. The 92 and a 95 engine would be pretty much wired the same.

Likely a 1995 Memcal / PROM Chip from a full size pickup, van, or suburban TBI 5.7 / 4L60E will be adequate, not optimal. Seems unlikely the tire size and gear ratio's of a "full size" will match the S10 tire size and gear ratio.

The 1992 5.7 Knock Sensor will need to be replaced with a 1995 5.7 Knock Sensor.

If you can get a wiring harness from a TBI S10 you will probably save yourself some work. There are a bunch of differences between the W code truck and the Z code. Many of the 93-94 trucks came with a CPI engine. That harness will be close but it will be short a set of wires for one of the TBI injectors.

After reviewing the VIN W - VCM wiring schematics the 96 ~ 99 Vortec 5.7 engine with a Black Box PCM or '0411 PCM would be a better option.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I already bought the 7427 computer before the other replies came through. I will figure out how to make that work.

My main goal with this truck is to get it moving, not necessarily to get max HP. Is there anything I should change in the tune other than gear ratio and tire size? I am still working my way through the beginner tune pro thread.

I’m not sure about the S10 you have, the full size 1995 4L60E transmissions are a “one year only” because the torque converter lockup is pulse width modulation (PWM).

There are many ways to make the 7427 work. Keep in mind that a changing directions with your PCM may be much cheaper than buying connectors and sensors necessary for using the '95 harness with the older pcm.

I have owned a few S10's and I do still remember a few interesting things about them. For example, using a full-size truck transmission in my '95 Blazer required changing the transmission to transfer case adapter and it required cutting ears off the bottom of the bellhousing so the braces from the engine mounts would fit.

The S10 transmissions generally used converters with a higher stall speed than a V8 powered truck. These converters work with a V8 but a stock engine will not be able to apply torque immediately off idle as it could do with a truck converter. The S10 transmissions used fewer clutches in at least one clutch pack and some folks worry that can lead to reliability issues with V8 swaps. As mentioned, a '95 transmission will have a different TCC strategy and may not work well with an older pcm. I think if I were planning to use an older computer I would also use an older transmission from a full size truck if possible.

94/95 was the beginning of a new generation of S10 and trucks from these years were designed knowing OBDII was coming. There were many changes over the previous generation of trucks. For example, it would be wise to check the wiring diagrams to see what component sends a signal to the speedometer and to make sure, if it's the pcm, that the 7427 can provide the same signal. If you are planning to use cruise control it would be a good idea to see if the older truck uses the same cruise configuration. Things like power steering hose threads may need to be checked, and A/C controls and wiring if retaining A/C. If you are going to TBI you may need to install additional circuits to power the second TBI injector.

There are some interesting solutions for radiator mounting out there... be sure to look at other folks' solutions. Even the engine mounts may not match up correctly. JTR books were good about pointing out these types of issues.
