Shock, vibration and temperature considerations for gm ecms

Hey guys place I work we are required to have our products pass a defined set of requirements for shocks, vibrations and heating/cooling, operation in corrosive environments etc... (something like mil-std-810).

Anyway, I was wondering if there ever were such requirements that GM was following in creation of these ECMs? Say be able to withstand a 10g drop during operation, or complete operation from -30deg to +200deg. I am curious because I plan to mount my LT1 computer in a potentially hot and vibration prone place.

If there weren't specific requirements, did they at least have "goals" they they were aiming for when designing these things?

They are mounted solid, under dash and have to stay dry. That said I've seen them mounted underhood and work fine till they get wet.

Ok very cool. Thanks for the reassurance eaglemark; that makes my life much easier. My 16159278 has waterproof connectors. It's from a 93 Camaro and thought it was under the hood? I picked the computer/harness up from a craigslist guy and he had it already out of the car when I got there.

GM has been using waterproof ECM/PCMs since 1988.... obviously, not in all applications.

they're all aluminum cases, waterproof ones have silicone seals for the connector shells and access cover. they do well unless one of the fasteners is loose/stripped, which happens alarmingly often.

I agree with the stripped fasteners/threads on the access cover.

I am not certain my 93s are in an aluminum case however. My 98 is for sure. It is ribbed cast aluminum. If the 93s are aluminum it is black painted thin sheet aluminum. I have sold the 94s and 96, and don't remember those pcm cases.

they're all aluminum as far as i know... the case of the 92-93 LT1 is identical to that of the 7727.

Very well could be. Yet not the finned cast aluminum of the late 90's and after, but a black painted aluminum sheet box.

sounds right. when i had my 9396 apart for the 100th time, i took a magnet to it and was surprised to see it not stick. it has some steel parts riveted on, IIRC.
