New Member 'need to become a tuner' - LT1 based Rock Buggy

Hey guys. My name is Paul - pretty much anything with wheels that rumbles is cool to me.

Most recently me and my friends have been working a project to build a go fast rock racer. Nearly the whole buggy is custom built out of my garage. Drivetrain is based on LT1 lifted from a 94 b-body. Previous owner had motor rebuilt and unfortunately (or fortunately) was not able to put it back together enough to run the upgraded motor.

We lifted out the engine/trans/wire harness and confirmed all was well by running prior to starting the project to build around it. Transmission has been rebuilt and now drivetrain is ready to come back to life for some fun.

Fast forward a year (one Saturday at a time) or so and we now have our buggy built around the drivetrain, engine runs but needs initial cleanup/tune....how I came to find this site.

I look forward to enjoying/learning from your projects and hopefully can draw from the experiences of the members.

Initially I am working to get basics up and running and once settled in tune for our specific needs.

As someone that is around Ultra 4 a lot... I can say tuning for that is very very different than street/strip style application. As much as go fast offroad is in and out of the throttle, you need to have everything very accurate and realize a small series of drag races is not the way to think about it.

Just did what started as a COPO LS 427 this weekend. Its now a 447 and a bit more pissed. No IAC on this setup. You could call it go fast off road.

lt1, right up our alley!

for an lt1 with offroad/race config, i'd run it naked to eliminate failure points. baseline it on o2s and knock sensor (if you still have any) without a maf, then yank the knock sensor, o2 sensors, anything like that and hand tune it. none of that crap matters on a race engine.

i even run my street cars open loop speed density now, the fine tuning ability you have for fueling is awesome....

definitely do try eehack, run it in 'f-body' mode (even though it's a b-body engine), you can try messing with coarse adjustments to timing advance while you're driving

I'd run speed density but keep the O2s. Any minor changes in the fuel system will want feed back. I do believe in running it as simple as possible though. Seen too many MAFs fail due to off road conditions.

LT1 wise, Steveo is the man. I'm just speaking from my experience.

Last night tho I ran into an issue. To ensure it was not computer/setup I tested on 2 Windows 10s & 1 XP computers, brand new cable, new FTDI VCP drivers with adjusted latency at 1ms yielded error (below) - feels like its on the buggy side from the wiring harness work but in case you have seen before thought id post.

It definitely connected as initial information from the ECM is displaying on the dashboard which is pretty cool.

Hey guys - good update.

Finally tracked down and resolved the issue - it was a bad ecm.

With a good ECM full connectivity has been acheived and first flash to put baseline bin without MAF and vats complete.

Now working the recommended path - get a good baseline - currently working a knock sensor issue.

Once I get past this phase I am really looking forward to get it running better as recommended above in the thread.

Hey guys.

Working the basics just now learning how things fit together.

Are there some good tune $eehack log files available on the site (I searched but didn't turn up) or would someone offer one that has some idle, throttle blips, mid throttle and WOT? I am looking to confirm my understandings on how things should look when in a good state of tune rather than bothering you guys with basic tuning 101 questions.

Appreciate any help. Paul
