Nearly Perfect 128 BLM's - By CHEATING!

Ok,
The phrase goes like this, criticize in private / praise in public.

I just can't keep quiet about what someone (who shall remain anonymous) did to a chip for a someone that actually paid $$$ for this low down good for nothing kind of work.:mad1:

Just set the BLM's parameters to 128, and you too can have nearly perfect BLM's of 128, see attached screen shots.

If you don't do your homework, you too might get CHEATED out of your $$$ Too!

he's the only one i've seen write closed loop open loop tunes like that.

now, lets back up a minute, what if he's actually tuning open loop and just going about it a different way?

i really appreciate a good open loop tune...

why don't you widen that BLM threshold back up, and show us a log so we can see how close his VE tables are?

if they're on the mark, there's no need for any sort of block learn mode. i mean that with all seriousness.

^^^AGREED....I have seen the same thing in a Brian Harris chip. Atleast in his older ways, he set the min/max to a window of 10, LOL. So Minimum of 123 and Maximium of 132.

His VE tables will not even be close and I am sure it runs horrible.

There are a couple of equally garbage LS tuners in my area too. One that I have seen his work so many times that I can tell it just looking at the tune and have named the tuner numerous times to people I am working on their car/truck. They always ask, How did you guess that? Like PE multiplier set to 1.40 and timing at 32* on a stock LS1 F-car HORRIBLE! One of his tunes on a naturally aspirated cammed LY6 6.0L smoked a 4L80E "built for 1,000 hp" in 4,000 street miles.

I'm not saying who did the chip.

It never occurred to me that maybe this was an open loop tune. Typically open loop tuning is done with a WBO2, that's how I tune for open loop. There is no WBO2 data in the attached .xdl.

The engine is basically a L31 with TBI.

The common pitfall that I think happens, it boils down to a lack of TunerPro RT skills on both parties (tuner and vehicle owner)

I think it's a very valid statement ... the more you know about EFI the better you will GOOOOOOOOOO with EFI.

Nope, not an open loop tune, that's not how you'd do it anyways...

This has been known for some time that there is a particular "tooner" that does this.

I just don't understand how people can do this and sleep at night. I prefer sitting my ass in the car being tuned, that way I can make sure the tune is right for THAT vehicle, I hate cheating.

This type of Cheating is likely NOT limited to ONE Particular "tooner". The " Cheater Cancer" is spreading.

I'd like to think my remote tuning is good, sometimes it's really good, but I'm not perfect. I openly share the tuning analysis with the vehicle owner, sometimes the vehicle owner will actually understand the analysis.

I have agenerally preferred to be in the car. But with today's technology I believe that remote tuning can create a good baseline calibration. As long as the customer is aware of and willing to accept the limitations of this method you should be fine.

with what they was doing with the o2 rich,mean ,lean, and the open loop afr ratio look's to me like they was trying to get mileage or lean cruise with this bin?

What about the INTs? Running short term only? INT updates BLM, not the other way around. If the INT is intact and working this could just be a non long term fuel trim tune. I'd rather see initial tuning off INT average than wait for BLM updates.

A friend used a mail-order tuner and is still very unsatisfied with how his vehicle runs. He still has the data logs sent to the tuner and we want to do some detective work to determine what was done. So, is there a device that allows reading/downloading the .bin of a 24-pin PROM that is still in the plastic holder? I ask because my success rate at separating the chip from the holder is very low. I want to be able to download the .bin of the last burned chip and NOT jeopardize or ruin the mail-order chip?

Unsoldering the socket out of a scrap ECM would allow you to read the chip without damaging it.

It probably is a crap tune, but without knowing the context of why the original chip was created or how it was being used it's hard to tell. I do agree with Skinny Pedal that it's possible INT was being used. It also could be locking all the trims expecting to tune with a wideband.

Doesn't have to be a scrap ECM...the way I start 24-28 zif mod, I'll take a needle nose and pull straight up on the lower half of the carrier socket. Pops right off leaving the 24 pins. De-solder 24 pins re-inserting them into the lower half of carrier socket. Pop that onto a ZIF just to sorta keep the pins in place. Now you can insert PROM carrier onto that and proceed to reading it in your burner.

Even though it's crap, well we wanna do this for the sake of this thread and post up another mail order tune (name to be withheld) to be dissected!!!

Totally agree!!! Use it as a guide but a blank canvass might be a better start for fixing the tune.

If it is soldered into the memcal one option would be to use jumper wires with two male ends, then plugging one in into the memcal, the other into the corresponding location on the chip burner/reader. The APU-1 and I believe the Burn2 from Moates have read/write capability. But dont quote me on that. I know the APU does.

Stew, I wanted to ask the question about a device but also did NOT want to hijack this thread. But since this thread was about "questionable" mail order tuning, gave it a shot. And so, like some TV shows indicate...TO BE CONTINUED.

Thanks Dave W...truly appreciate your offer. Since this is his daily driver, we can't send away the chip and have his truck in-op.
