Old tuner. New here.

I'm new to this site but I am an old tuner. Been doing it since '99. I did a lot of early stuff with the $0D mask especially MPFI mode. Lately I have been pretty much exclusively doing OBDII but I am starting a new project. I have a '70 Chevelle with a GM 350HO that I am converting to RamJet EFI and I will be using a 16197427 TBI PCM in MPFI mode using my own modified version of the $0D. It will have dual e-fan/dual speed control like the late model trucks, N2O solenoid control, wide-band datalogging and I am working on WBO2 controlled closed loop but nowhere near done. The engine will be backed by a stage 2 4L60E from PATC and a 10 bolt 3.73 posi. I hope to be done by the end of summer. We'll see.

That Chevelle sounds like it will be a fun car to drive.

I am somewhat suprised you did not put a vortec timing cover on that engine and switch over to the LS1 0411 PCM knowing you once owned Tunercats but I do understand you $0D work.

Chris, I never left the tuning world. I just left the tuning boards. I got tired of all the BS. Like I said, I mostly have been doing OBDII tuning for a few local shops and even got into the marine ECM tuning on GM crate engines. That is not fun, just FYI. That ECM fueling is pulse-width based, not VE.

As for the chevelle, I just had all this stuff laying around so I figured why not use it. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of the '0411 and later DBW PCM's but this project just seemed to call for old school stuff. The car is fun to drive now as it is carbed. It has been on the last two power tours and did the long-haul on the last one an

Well thats good. I am doing mostly OBDII stuff now. My Titan is Uprev tuned by me and I still have the old Express that I swapped to an 0411 with the Marine L31 intake and put a 4L80E in.

I have played a bit with the MEFI Marine stuff myself. It certainly is pulse width, much like the JTEC Chrysler stuff I have tuned with the 318/360 and early 4.7 engines. I tuned a 6.2 MPFI swap in a 1943 off road military truck with a NV4500 manual. It was a bit of a PITA, but worked out well once I got closed loop pinned up, functional, and figured out how to get the tip-in correct for both spark and fuel.

I also got a chance to play with the old eldelbrock chip based MPFI setup on a 1971 Chevy truck.

It seems like it should be simple on the face, but when you realize how much the automotive GM ecm programming saves you from having to work out every PW value manually, the MEFI quickly becomes work.

If someone would post a stock / unmodified MEFI.bin file, I will try to develop an Excel Macro to process the PW values. It would be helpful if I had a .xdl file to playback and export to a .csv file to work with.

i do a bit of mefi too (but on actual boats), i've never found pulsewidth mapping itself to be very difficult, in fact having a more static calculation that wont get dicked around by ecm calculations is kind of nice in a way, especially on a vehicle that'll never see very diverse conditions.

luckily it's a boat so you can easily run it at whatever rpm and load you feel like for a while for testing, you can change props or just sandbag it to put it in different load range.

it ends up kind of looking like a VE table in the end, so interpolating the rough areas isnt that bad.

the real bitch is that most of the boats i work on have raw saltwater dumped into the exhaust, so you cant just go throwing an o2 in there, it's pretty much plug chops or 'by feel' or nothing, and you have to constantly swap props and dick around to simulate different loads. having water cooled exhaust that's below water most of the time also makes it really hard to hear/smell/see if the mixture is out to lunch.

unlike a car that uses the majority of the ve table, your average boat ends up drawing two lines across the fueling map, and that's it. one line in low-ish rpm and high map for popping it up onto plane, and the other one kinda in 50-70 map for when it's actually on plane.

you'd figure you can just fix those areas of fueling and it'll be ok, but then an adverse condition happens, like the guy goes and throws 10 people in the boat and tries to climb up a wave, then down the other side of the wave, where he pussies out and lets right off the throttle. at this point, the thing is fighting 8000+ pounds of weight down a hill, so it's running like 4k rpm @ 15kpa map, practially engine braking, which is an area you'd NEVER figure a boat would even touch.

I love this idea! Great to see you over here, I've had more than a few of your posts help me with things in the past. :wtg:

What you call work, I call a PITA. The hardest part is thinking in Alpha-N versus Speed Density when in actuality the MEFI is a hybrid of both in the crate motor cals.

Dave, that is a generous offer. I would hate for you to do all that work especially when the MEFI datalogging is not compatible in TPRT v5. I have tried to get it to work several times but with no success. It only works with the beta version of Scannerpro. That's another reason it is a PITA. If anyone else has had success with MEFI and TPRT 5 datalogging, let me know.

I recently received some MEFI information, including Scannerpro. I was looking for some files (data logs) to learn / work with.

On the topic of tuning the '7427 PCM ... About 2 years ago another gearhead-efi member, PJG1173, but together a Microsoft Access spreadsheet that does a great job of WBO2 VE tuning the '7427 PCM. See attached .zip file. The thread is here: http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Inj...ning-with-WBo2
