16197427 Conversion With Turbo 400

Most everyone here knows I've done several '427 upgrades. I'm converting an 89 Suburban 383 / TH400 from a 1228747 ECM to a 16197427 PCM. I'd like to program the AT kick down relay using the '427 EGR output. The question I have is the EGR output to the EGR solenoid of a 16197427 a ground signal or a +12 volts? I'm wanting to use the TPS settings for EGR ON / EGR OFF to operate the AT kick down relay. I was thinking that the EGR ON / EGR OFF parameters were a good option to control the AT Kick Down realy because the Temp settings, RPM setting, and MPH settings would become very convenient parameters to operate the AT Kick Down relay. The old 1228747 ECM used pin A7 to operate the AT Kick Down relay with a ground signal.

Maybe pin E1 will work? I need to be able to energize the AT Kick Down under certain conditions.

I want to use the EGR ON / EGR OFF programming for the AT Kick Down. The EGR ON / OFF is set by TPS%, RPM, and CTS. I want to set the AT Kick Down to engage on at 94% TPS with a Minimum RPM of 1400 RPM's and the engine warmed up to 140 degrees F. I want set the AT Kick Down Relay to disengage at 75% TPS and a Minimum 1400 RPM.

The information you posted shows pin E1 basically 12 Volt all the time when the ignition switch is in the on position.

I understand what your trying to do. Since there is power there and you can control what it does in the 16197427 maybe you can get it to turn off? work opisite of what it does?

The other idea that poped into my head when you brought this up was using another relay. Except when it is energized it would ground insted of turn on?

If you need more diagrams I have all the diagnostic charts like the first one listed for the 16197427 and a full set of the one you posted sideways... :tounge:

You know what dave, if you can't make this work a simple switch on the accelerator pedal could do the job!

From your diagram the kickdown is grounded and the Orange wire usually means it is a fused power circut so the power is there and just needs to be turned on. I think if you played with that relay on the bench you could reverse a wire and make it work.

Although it says B+ when key on and run the XDF says
TPS for EGR on is 31.3 % and EGR off at 41.4 percent but that controls the pintle in this ECM. So wiring from the pintle to the relay may just do what you want?

Looking at the 427 EGR Pintle you have power, you have ground and you have gray wire which I think is control. I relaly think it's doable!

Wait a minute? Isn't the turbo 400 a vacuum kickdown already installed?

I hooked up a manually controlled ground wire (old A7) to the AT Kick Down relay. Hammered the throttle to 100% / 50 MPH then sent ground to the AT Kick Down relay, and KA-BAM, kick down occurred. Without the ground going to the Kick Down relay, nothing happened. :doh:

Well than you got it. I swear Turbo 400's have been around longer than ECMs and had vacuum or linkage kickdowns. I know the Turbo 350 did.

I wish I had my 427 hooked up to the simulater and I would test it for you. I will have time next week to change it over from the 7747, don't know when your starting this. But from the looks of the wires to the EGR pintle I think it's doable.

Older Turbo 400 had kick down switches either at the carburetor linkage, or accelerator pedal linkage . I thought about doing a retro-fit kick down switch to send ground to the kick down relay, but that is just not my style of fixing things. I wanted to figure out a software solution. I'll leave the retro-fit kick down switches for the knuckle dragging Neanderthal types. :laugh:

Plus it is so much nicer to change how and when it kicks down by just a few keystrokes without even opening the hood. :rockon:
